Keilwerth Shadow SX90R Tenor Saxophone
Physical Features
With a black nickel-plated body made from nickel-silver, black finger buttons and silver-plated keys, this saxophone not only has an extra-ordinary appearance, it also features a new, ergonomically adapted keywork. The Sound
The new Keilwerth saxophone "Shadow" combines the advantages of nickel silver with those of a black nickel-plate finish. Nickel silver adapts to and conducts changing frequencies faster than other material, resulting in a very direct response, and a well centered and extremely powerful sound. The Package
Another important advantage is the reduced weight and the high stability. In combination with the black nickel plating, a completely new sound spectrum is created. Thus, the new Shadow saxophone offers a new sound alternative within the range of Keilwerth nickel silver saxophones. Julius Keilwerth Shadow saxophone: the top saxophone for those who are looking for something exceptional!

As you can see from the music I play, I was looking for a big, colorful, rich sound (somewhere between Sonny Rollins and Harold Land). I tried a few Mark VI's, an old Keilwerth, a R54, a Yamaha Custom Z, and a brushed silver sx90-r. The Vi's were great, but they were early vintage and way to expensive (and weren't that versatile in their sound, either) and the others just didn't have that complex vintage sax sound. I tried the shadow side by side with the brushed silver, and although it took sometime, I did notice a significant difference in sound and feel. The shadow can do everything because it has a really malleable core sound, that?s always rich in overtones (but not bright), so whatever style of music you play will work depending on the mouthpiece. In terms of new saxophones, there is nothing better.

This horn has a remarkable sound. Any sax player knows you can aquire different tones depending on your mouthpiece and reed. The black nickel produces a dark velvet sound. depending on your mouthpiece, this sound can be brightened. The horn also has a very quick key respose. I find that the G# key is still getting stuck - a problem that was supposed to be fixed with the g# key lift mechanism......Keeping this horn fingerprint free is next to impossible. make sure you keep the silver plated keys dry and fingerprint free to prolong its life. I also found that after adjusting the left hand palm keys, one of them did not tighten after I adjusted it. Maybe it's isolated to my horn, but check it out. I previously owned the Keilwerth brushed nickel silver tenor. This horn was a bit brighter in tone, but played just as nice, minus the fingerprints and silver key worries. You can add silver tarnish strips to your case to help with this. The horn is a bit pricey. Do I think it's worth the money? If you are looking for a unique looking horn with professional quality and sound, then yes. If you are a beginner or intermediate player, then you could save some money buying a brushed nickel silver SX90R or any other SX90R. Keilwerth make great profession horns. I highly recommend the SX90R series.

"a remarkable professional Saxophone"

I am just a student who doesn't have that much hands-on experience with saxophones. The only saxophone I had prior to the Shadow Tenor I bought was a student Selmer aristocrat model. When I did go to WWBW, I went twice. The first time I tried out Keilwerths, Yamahas, and Selmer?s. The 2nd time I knew I was going to buy something since they received more shadows...immediately the two best ones were the Selmer Series III and the Shadow. the particular models of the ref 54 and Keilwerth sx90r(1 brass, 1 black nickel, 1 nickel silver) I tried had some faults that were most likely due to leaks...which made it extremely difficult to get the low notes out. Also the tones on most of them were somewhat dull and uninteresting, and required a lot of air to play. The Series III is an excellent horn. All the horns from Selmer, Yamaha, and Keilwerth are great, to me it just came down to preference of sound. I loved both the Series III and the Shadow, but in the end I really liked the unique sound of the Shadow. The Series III had a very warm tone, while the Shadow was slightly brighter. It feels great in my hand with the cupped pearls, and plays wonderfully. I picked the shadow over the Series III because it had a nice sound, and it is probably the free-est blowing and most responsive horn i have played. Like all instruments however, there are some issues that require the player some work. Like most saxophones, my D was pretty stuffy, and my Side C was a bit flat, but after getting used to it you can get a great sound out of it. Even though these high end Saxophones can get rather expensive, I don't really think money is an issue if your a growing musician and you find the saxophone that you enjoy and plan to use for the rest of your life. Keilwerth saxophones claim that the construction of their bow help with the low notes, and with my experience with the shadow, it is true. Though not TOO much of a difference, I can play the lower notes with more control and ease. Also this is probably the most beautiful horn you will ever find.

All I really have to say about the shadow is Excellent. This horn is great (takes some getting used to). It has that dark robust tone that every contemporary player is looking for. Has a great feel with the cupped inlays and a nice look. Very beautiful horn. Love the engraving. Definitely a must have.

It's the best saxophone I played. I like it better than a MARK 7.
