I was introduced to the Kellyberg mouthpiece last week. My immediate reaction was unbridled enthusiasm, and it has not diminished. I used to play on a Helleberg mouthpiece, but I changed because the cut of the metal inner rim was rather sharp for me and not very comfortable. The Kellyberg Lexan polycarbonate rim is very comfortable by comparison. I play a Miraphone 188 in the South Carolina Philharmonic, and the orchestra mouthpiece I have been using has given my very good results. But I have desired a broader sound with a little less bite to it. The Kellyberg gives me the smoothest sound I have ever gotten. I then found out how inexpensive this mouthpiece is. This could change my thinking as a teacher. Because of the price of most brands of mouthpieces, sometimes $100 on discount, I have never been one to experiment or to recommend experimenting, it's just too expensive. When the Kelly mouthpiece starts becoming available in other stock sizes I plan on having them available for my students to try, and it won't cost me an arm and a leg.
With the price of this mouthpiece, how can you go wrong? And the kind of sound it produces is so different from metal mouthpieces. Before this, I was just using a big ol' Bach 24AW. I tried my Kellyburg out on my school's sousaphone at a pep band gig for the first time last night, and it gave me the perfect kick I need for marching/pep band stuff. Low notes roll out effortlessly compared to before (which I've been needing on my pep band gigs), and the broader tone is just right for the sousaphone. After just one night, I'm sold on this for all my future sousa needs. I love the lightness of the mouthpiece, and the fact that it's always warm (can't wait to march with it in parades next year), but it's not going to be an all-purpose for me. It doesn't seem to have a dark enough tone to use it much in the concert hall, and it's more demanding to play with, but I'm quite satisfied with my purchase.
I am a student of Dr. Davis and after the lauds he gave the Kellyberg, I decided to try it myself. I currently play on a metal Conn Helleberg so I was not expecting much of a change. Imagine my shock the first time I tried the Kellyberg and found out what a difference the in sound there was! The new mouthpiece is so incredibly light when I play, it is a nice change. Not to mention the edge that usually comes from extreme volume playing is virtually completely gone. This mouthpiece is a must have for any tuba player, especially at such a low cost.
I originally played a Conn Helleberg mouthpiece, and I had heard about Kelly mouthpieces and wanted to try one. I was happy that they offered a mouthpiece similar to the one I was already using. This mouthpiece is great if you love playing loud and getting that throaty sound when you spread the tone a little bit. If I were you I'd stick with a traditional mouthpiece in the concert hall, and save this one for marching or pep bands. It's virtually indestructible and extremely lightweight. A great buy for the price.
This mouthpiece is wonderful!! I've had it for a day, and have fallen in love with it. I've never played on a tuba mouthpiece with such comfort. The response is unappalled. I am a Euphonium major, and the change is seamless and painless between the two. If you are a part time hobbyist or a highschool/college band player, this is the mouthpiece for you!!!!!
