I used the horn for 4 years. It's a solid horn, and it stands up to a lot of abuse that it's quite likely to get in a marching band. It's not the best sounding horn ever made, but it really gets the job done. The valves started to get especially sticky during my 4th year, despite proper care, but I didn't always take good care of it so it's probably my fault. I don't think I would use this for corps, but for most applications it's a good horn.
This horn is definitely one of the better horns I've played on. Its response in the high range is amazing and it has enough depth to resound in the low ranges. I have used this horn several times and know that such corps as Boston Crusaders, Blue Knights, and last year Phantom Regiment used them. This horn just has a habit of not being able to handle a huge amount of wear and tear, the welds come apart.
This instrument is great for amateurs. This is not for pros, but its playability, response, feel, and tone make it a very solid beginner Mellophone.
positives: - bordering on "concert instrument" intonation - about 50% more resonant (quality and quantity of sound) than most other mellophones - #1 slide usually works well on these negatives: - expensive - bell is somewhat thin/delicate (but adds to resonance) - quality of construction has dropped on this just a bit over the last decade...(but what made in USA hasn't?) - imo BETTER resonance/intonation than Kanstul, BETTER resonance/durability than Yamaha...overall, the BEST
