I am a band director and tried this horn. The King looks great, but the overall playability was not as good as some others I've tried. The high range was fairly nice, but I found the low register (especially fourth-line f down to b-flat) to be very flat and difficult to bring to pitch. This was consistent with others that played the horn as well. Another annoyance with the horn is the weight distribution - it seems front (bell) heavy and is very taxing on the arms.
The sound for this horn is very good in the high range, but becomes pretty flat on the lower notes. This horn is good for the Lead parts of a Drum and Bugle corps not for the lower part made for the Euphonium. The horn is light, but the weight is very spread out, so its hard to hold. Most of the weight does lead forward though. Overall, this is a good horn.
I have marched with this horn for two years and have had an overall satisfactory experience with it. The high register is beautiful and projects very well, but, like many will tell you, anything on the staff or below is usually flat in pitch and sounds poor compared to the upper register. The horn is stuffy, however, and the balance is somewhat front-heavy. The horn is extremely durable and reliable though. My band recently went to Hawaii, and the baritone and case came out unscathed. A friend of mine tripped while marching, and the horn took the impact. It came out with a small crease in the bell, but was still entirely playable and functional. The case included is very durable and provides excellent protection and storage capabilities. I am able to fit all of my music and miscellaneous uniform parts inside of the case. Overall, the horn is a good choice due to its durability, value, and presence. I would recommend this horn to people looking for a sturdy, intermediate level marching instrument.
