The good: sound is fantastic. Very resonant and easily the equal of the 20k. The bad: 2 things (1) The valves are stiff and long throw. Makes it harder to play. Switching from a 20k with short throw valves is difficult. (2) It is not a horn for the weak. Very front end heavy and puts a lot of stress on your arms. This is probably a good horn for a college tuba player. I would not recommend for bands where there is any chance of a younger tuba player. 8th and 9th graders don't need to try marching this beast. At 29 pounds it is already on the heavy side for a "contra style" marching tuba, and the fact that it is poorly balanced does not help. There are a variety of hand hold possibilities but it doesn't change the fact that it is HEAVY.
I use this great beast in my high school marching band in my sophomore year. This tuba is heavy and harder to march with, but it provides greater tuning and sound ability. I would suggest marching with a system blue mouthpiece to provide a brighter and fuller sound.
this is a outstanding marching tuba. i have used this horn in the past in a drum corp setting and if it lasted a season in drum corp, then it will last in any marching band setting. the only down side to this is the weight of it. but like most things, if you work at it you can over come it.
