I dunno, I played mostly Bachs for a very long time. I fell for the King sound. Then this horn came out. Beautiful sound and character. plays open. Doesn't feel as big as a 36 or 78H and has a big 3B sound. But it plays like a jazz horn. Very cool.
This trombone has a great sound, but contrary to what the reviewer above stated, was not JJ Johnson's trombone. He played a King 3B with a specially made slide that was the size of the 2B slide. He did not play a a 3B plus.
This is the famed King 3B+, the Legendary Jazz trombone, played by one of the greatest jazz trombonists, JJ Johnson. And, Me!! I got mine used, I've had it for about half of a year now. it is a wonderful horn. The King slide runs great, after years of wear. It plays magnificently, but it is NOT FOR BEGINNERS. The medium bore is perfect for anything from jazz, classical, or even a blues band. The rotor valve runs great, but does need periodic cleaning, as does the rest of the horn. I would recommend this horn to anybody that is serious about playing.
I bought this horn in gold brass to be an all around gig horn for chamber music, big band and jazz solo work. Slide is straight but tight and is very smooth using slide-o-mix light. Tone is bright and can be played very loud without breaking up.
Pro trombones with a medium-large bore (.525) seem to come and go. The Bach 36 and 36B have been popular, but Conn, King and Holton discontinued their medium bore horns. Now King is making the 3B+ again. I own the gold brass model which has a very nice warm sound. It is still more of a jazz horn than a symphony horn. The 3B+ is perfect for: musicals, players that need a smaller horn but usually play a large bore, someone wanting a mellower sound than a .500 bore, players tired of struggling with 42B's, 88H's etc. The horn is easy to play and highly recommended.
