A great horn. Our University just bought these horns and they work great. We've had a few problems with the horns collecting water in the pipes, but the great sound that the horn produces outweighs that.
When my professor's horn was being repaired, he borrowed one of these from a local high school. He played it and loved it, and I tested it as well being in the market at the time. I ended up purchasing one as well, and play this as the top chair in the conservatory; in short, this horn really does compete with the Miraphones and Willsons etc that cost twice as much, esp. if you know how to play it. I'd suggest catching on to the quality before the manufacturer does and increases the price :)
I've had this tuba for several years, and while it's a very nice horn for the budget, it has its fair share of problems. Not to denounce a pretty solid tuba but several issues I'm pointing out come from years of experience with this tuba. First, the intonation is very uneven (even compared to other B-flats) providing the fundamental pitch as well as the 2nd-4th partial to be very awful. To be in tune in a moderately cool room requires you to be pulled 80 percent out. Second, the water builds up in odd places. The water keys don't work unless you spin the horn around, which is very frustrating. Fourth, the buttons are so bulky and clunky it is immensely difficult to play really fast passages. And lastly, the pitch below low F is HORRENDOUS and STUFFY. I understand that you're not going to get the response as you would from a C, but the low C/Db does NOT speak, and I've seen several players attempt to blow them out, with no signs of consistency between the range.
These have been my issues with the horn. Since then I've ventured for Miraphone (B-flat/CC), Yamaha, B&S, and the glorious Hirsbrunner (which our school owns). For the money this horn is nice but I would NOT recommend for anybody wishing to pursue music as a career. Venture for more even tubas like a Miraphone or a Meinl Weston for a bit more.
This horn is fabulous. Throughout my high school career, it has served me well. The only caution is that the brass is soft, so be careful when handling, but the sound that results from the softness of the brass more than makes up for it.
This is a good tuba to buy, yes it has piston valves but it?s worth it. I own a 1973 King 2340 and this 2341 is great addition to my collection. If you have the money, buy it.
