Simply put like all reeds LaVoz are not perfect! However one undeniable fact about reeds is that the more one sheds, time allotted to practice the better any reed becomes. There is no substitute, no mouthpiece, and no reed that can replace consistent practice PERIOD!!!, could have just a little tiny more heart which would help with the dark tones we sometimes need would be nice however a nice Florida Link may solve that nicely. It's a nice combo when I think about it. The Late great & beautiful Musician Michael Brecker played "LaVoz reed for many years & often like all of us he prayed to the great reed god in the sky for the perfect reed, only like the rest of us to find the solution in the practice room. To all musicians out there bringing a smile or a tear to the world with the beautiful music you make I wish you all the best, remember nothing delivers like CONSISTENT practice Best always Robert H. McGowan ... To the Magic of Scottish Tenor Player Tommy Smith!!

I've used LaVoz consistently, but in the last 15 years or so, been using Hemke as well (& Rico plasticovers for summer outdoor gigs), however, I keep coming back to LaVoz... As David Sanborn says, these reeds "have heart", and in my opinion, "sing" & with much "warmth". Never have liked Vandoren, regular are too stiff, Java just never did anything for me, and Rico was ok, but not anything special. Yes, they are inconsistent, so I often end up shaving & cutting most of them, especially as I'm playing them, gotta keep adjusting, trying to maintain that balance of ease of blowing, along with preventing the tip from flaccidity. And while I like Hemke, they are more consistent, & seem to wear out more slowly; I just keep coming back to LaVoz. As for mouthpieces, I've mainly used metal Bergs (currently 130/1 & gold Bari 8* tenor, 120/3 & Couf 10 alto, & Vandoren V25 or 35 on soprano), but also some hard rubber Lakey, Rico Royal, Meyer, etc.
