Ordered The LeBanc cushions because of the Company reputation. Received the cushions but could not separate them. The glue must really be fantastic! Other cushion I have used in the past were packaged individually. I'm going back to the Giardinelli cushions.
The best mouthpiece patch on the market. I recommend for all of my students. Ideal for Larry Teal Mouthpieces.
Ditto the comments of the previous review. The "thin" cushion is the optimum choice, as it allows for the teeth to slide when needed, allowing for more effective dynamic control. This is a somewhat "advanced" technique, but truly rudimentary. If you have ears to hear, you will notice an immediate increase in tonal resonance. Evidently, without the cushion, your teeth absorb energy that the "beak" of the mouthpiece would otherwise receive to generate & energize the sound. This is true for all mouthpiece materials, including crystal.
There are 2 great reasons to use these patches. 1. They protect the top of the mouthpiece from teeth scratches. 2. They help keep the mouthpiece stable in the embouchure which helps with consistent and comfortable sound emission. I feel the clear (thin) patches are superior to the black thick patches. The clear ones last longer (for years if you're careful when you put them on). While you can bite through the black ones eventually, it's virtually impossible to bite through the clear ones. Also, the thick black patches significantly increase the "bite" size of the mouthpiece where the clear ones add a minimal amount.
I recently bought these cushions (thin, clear) to mainly keep the mouthpiece from breaking in half from huge teeth *GROOVES*, but when they got here, I read the pack and it said to put it in the ligature area to improve ligature-to-reed vibration for better tone. I wondered if I should and then later put it on my mouthpiece (beak and ligature area) and slipped a reed on, making sure it was on its sweet spot and put the ligature on like I always do to ensure I was being consistent and played just the mouthpiece and it BLEW...MY...MIND.I tried the new mouthpiece (Vandoren V16 7 facing) yesterday and got a little used to it but it didn't sound like I would expect it to (mouthpiece alone and the sax), but now, seeing the huge difference with mouthpiece alone, I cannot wait to try the whole sax with them. I did NOT expect that much of a difference just from putting a cushion between the reed and the mouthpiece and now I cannot wait to play again. VERY GOOD BUY!!!
The clear ones disappear on top of your mouthpiece and provide a non slip grip for your front teeth. They also prevent your front teeth from digging a trench in your mouthpiece. They are so thin, if it weren't for the comfort, you wouldn't know they were there. The adhesive sticks tight but will tolerate peeling off to reposition a few times if necessary. After 6 months or so of hard use, they will start to yellow and disintegrate and it's time for a new one. They are addictive. Bay also makes a black one that is a little thicker and softer but I like the clear ones.
I have used these for over a decade - on my own mouthpieces, with my private students, and on the clarinet mouthpieces at school. As a player I appreciate the comfort and the elimination of excess vibration, and prefer the thin style of this product over the thicker brands that tend to dampen too much. As a band director, I pair these w/ Hite Premier mouthpieces for my middle school clarinet and sax players as a tool to acheiving more uniform tone and intonation, and have also found that the extra stability of the top teeth helps develop young embouchures. The fact that the patch prevents damage and wear to the top of the mouthpiece is a real help when it comes to my school budget, as I get more years of use out of my woodwind mouthpieces.
