I never thought I'd use a synthetic reed, but I'm glad I tried this one. I needed something that wouldn't dry out if I had a long pause between songs (such as in church services) and would respond beautifully and sound the same every time. This one is it! It's dependable and consistant. It has a full sound without being squaky. I can comfortably hit a full range of notes without it giving out or changing. I love it. And the 1/4 step thicknesses is great. I'm exactly a 3.25
I will never play on a cane reed again. Ever. After picking up my clarinet again after some time off after college, I found myself frustrated trying to find a good consistent reed (which seems to always be the case for us reed instrumentalists). I was curious about these reeds and thus received one for Christmas. It felt strange initially, but WOW. What a difference. Plays immediately and sounds incredible. If you are unsure, just look up some videos of people playing these. The price is completely worth it and the reed will last you so much longer than a cane reed. They are very consistent since they are all made the same. I never write reviews for anything, but this is seriously the best thing since sliced bread and the world needs to know about it! These reeds have brought back my love of playing clarinet because it took away the stress of the reed variable. Legere, a thousand times thank you! And WWBW, prices are great and shipping was incredibly fast!
After the clarinet professor at a nearby university recommended this reed to me for marching band and I read the positive reviews, I went ahead and ordered one from wwbw. This reed is incredible for marching! No synthetic material will quite give you the sound and feel of a good cane reed (personally, I prefer Vandoren V12s for symphonic music), but this reed is consistent, durable, and convenient. It doesn't need to be wet! So I can stand at attention for hours in any weather and be ready to play right away. Not only did I love this reed, but I'm telling the rest of the reed players at my school to buy one right away.
Once you determine the right strength for your setup, Legere reeds play almost identical to the finest cane reeds with an important exception: All you have to do is pick up the instrument and play. No moisture or resetting the reed is needed. I use these exclusively when any of my instruments have to sit idle for long periods before my next entrance. And I still get compliments for the quality of my sound.
I am torn on weather these reeds are too expensive. I agree with others that I would have to go throught an entire box to find a reed sound this good right out of the box. I play on a jazz setup, Optimum Lig, EJB Vandorean MPC, and I picked a 2.25 reed which is great for me.
I recieved legit training so I have a very dark tone, that's why I use such bright equipment, but with more closed MPCs such as the B45 and B46 from Vandorean I wasn't getting the volumne I needed. I have found getting pieces with more then enough volume is the right answer. You never want to force volume in Jazz. It just sounds bad. With extra volume, you can layback and sound comfortable. I am going to go switch over my saxes now and see if I am as happy.
It's a liitle weird looking at a blue reed after playing for 22 years but with change comes new experiences. I can't say I ever enjoyed sanding reeds, nor was I ever any good at it.
I love this reed!
I play in a clarinet choir, and as soon as I joined, I noticed that all the members were using this reed, so I gave it a try. AND IT WAS AWESOME!!!! The only thing is that It offers a very reedy sound (ironic, right), and isn't the best for concerts. It is still great for practicing
Clarinet is not my first instrument, but I am required to play a lot of it for shows on my cruise ship. The Legere responds better than any cane reed I've ever played on the instrument, and as other reviewers have said - it can also sit for long periods of time (I've tried hours, for instance) and play consistently with nice volume and projection. A must try for the reed doubler. I didn't like them on saxophone as much, but perhaps that is because I am most critical of my tone on that instrument.
A professional clarinetist recommended this to me and it has improved my tone quality so much. It's rich and clean in sound. It's exactly like a regular wood reed except this reed does not need to be wetted and it does not squeak! It lasts longer and it's worth the price. I had my first one for about 1 year. It was really handy for marching band, since we would march for a long time and, naturally, our reeds dried out, and if we tried to play them, they would squeak. The plastic reed does not need to be wetted at all. I tried going back to a wood reed but I noticed that it sounded horrible, so I have stayed with plastic reeds since. Legere is the only good plastic reed out there and most others are cheap imitations.
This is great for marching band! A must have for high school and college marching band students! Never dries out, great under chilly conditions! Beware that as it heats up the sound quality isn't as nice. Therefor you might want to consider getting a half step stronger strength so when the reed and Clarinet heat up your tone stays consistent under normal playing conditions. Also, great for beginners that don't know much about reed working. Of any synthetic or plastic reed this is the best one by far!!!! I highly recommend it to all my students curious to try a synthetic.
