These are the ultimate reeds for Bb contra. Many players use Rico reeds, which are actually too small for a Bb contra mouthpiece, resulting in weak tone and increased air consumption. Vandoren reeds are large enough but incredibly expensive and most are defective. These reeds are too large for an Eb contra mouthpiece and will sound terrible on it; I use a Legere bari sax reed for Eb and it's much better.
This is basically the only option for contrabass (BBb) clarinet. I tried using the Vandoren reeds for contra, but I found the quality to be very poor compared to the clarinet reeds and the reeds would only last two or three rehearsals before dying. These reeds definitely sound like any other Legere reed in that they're not quite as good-sounding as a good cane reed, but the most important aspect of a contra is getting a consistent reed that seals well, and nothing will beat one of these reeds in that regard. Missing one star for tone, in my opinion. Legere needs to make their reeds out of a denser material for contrabass for this to really work.
The most important piece of advice with any reed you have of this size and material vibrating is to get a glass bed reed case. These reeds will not experience warping in the same fashion, but it's still a good idea to keep them on a piece of glass. I started on size three Vandoren Contra Bass clarinet reeds, but had problems with the reed wearing out very quickly. They would warp beyond all recognition and this being within a couple weeks of playing twice a week. With this synthetic reed, I have greater response in all ranges of the instrument (Leblanc Straight BBflat contra, old). This is very important in contemporary music, where the contra does a lot of jumping octaves. I also felt my tone darken, providing me with a much rounder and focused sound. The other performers seemed to enjoy my sound better, because the reed "chatter" was reduced. If you are one who is stuck on playing wood reeds, give this a try. Even if you keep it for backup (I admit, for my soprano I have a Fibracell just in case) you will not be disappointed!
I Love the Legere synthetic reeds. They play wonderfully, and allow for the same or better resonant tone of a wooden reed!!
very easy to play, indestructable in comparison to other brands
