I bought this as an upgrade to my Korg Ax1500G, and what can I say other than it's a hundred times better. I'd always wanted a POD, but because of the extra cost of getting a FBV Shortboard for live use, I thought 'maybe one day, but it's just too much. Now however, they've released the PODXT Live, and it is seriously good. The amp models are fantastic, play any kind of music and it's most probable there are three in there for you at least, but hell, every single one has something going for it. It can record, go through your amp....anything!
There is nothing to fault, other than the fact you may find that you don't use half of the tones once you've found the ones for you, but they're always there, for if you ever do.
Effects are great, and it comes with an extra FX junkie pack! Imagine having a Phase 90, Fat RAT, and a synth ready, just there, and thats just three! Of 80!
Honestly, you will not regret buying one of these ever, it's an absolute godsend, and sounds just amazing. Great build quality also, (no need to replace a volume knob that keeps falling off after some stage use!).
So go out and get POD'ed!
If you cannot get a good sound from this unit, it's because...
1)You do not have good experience deep editing/creating sounds
2)You haven't read the owner's manual, and know the many functions of the unit
3)You expect this to sound exactly like the tones heard on your favorite band CD's right out of the box.
**It's in there, trust me...you just have to know how to edit and build the sounds, that's all**
I bought this pedal about 6 months ago because I thought that it was a way better deal than buying like 10 separate stompboxes. Overall, the construction is very solid, almost all metal. The sounds are all awesome, and there are a wide range of stomps, delays, mods, and reverbs. The pedal lets you tweak everything, which is awesome. The only complaints I have are that the wah pedal squeaks a bit (I knew this ahead of time-it's not bad, except when you are using a wah, and even then you can just crank the volume), and the distortion models don't have quite as much bottom end, i.e., earth-shaking fury, as a stompbox like the Digi Metal Master or the MT-2 put out. Other than that, it is a great buy, and very cheap for what you get. I'm very glad I bought it.
I've had my Pod XT Live for about 6 months now and have been thoroughly satisfied. I've had extensive experience with solid state and tube amplifiers as well as miscellaneous stomp boxes, Digitech Processors and the original Pod 2.0. In a side-by-side comparison, the XT Live blows them away when you factor in the sound quality, flexibility, upgradeability and overall convenience. Here are some quick thoughts... Pros: Sound Quality; the tone, whether you play directly into a PA or through an amplifier, is awesome. It does take some tweaking to get the most out of your system but the owner?s manual is very helpful and you have almost infinite ability to tweak the output to match your system. Convenience: The XT Live puts hundreds quality of amps and pedals literally at your feet. Switching from channel to channel and tweaking on the fly is intuitive and fast. Upgradeability: the ability to download updates, patches and channels is fantastic. The free software installs easily and the library of tones is huge. Cons: Reverb control: this may be minor to some people but I wish there was a pedal for reverb. You can lean over to turn it on and off and tweak it but you can't do it with your foot. Software: the updating and tweaking software is nice but you can only access it when the XT Live is plugged into your computer. You can't download channels now and sync later. Major flaw! Hints: If you run your XT Live into an amp, use the effects-in plug if one is available. As soon as you get your Pod, register online and download all of the updates and patches to get the most out of it. Also, download some sample channels from the library. Some are fantastic. Finally, get creative. I have had a great time creating my own channels. With so many parameters to work with, the opportunities are almost limitless. Shalom.
A while back I decided to purchase the Line6 GuitarPort for use with a laptop when traveling. I was blown way with its amp models and effects. Once I immersed myself into the Line6 world and the hundreds of quality tones (presets/patches) available, I decided to try a Variax. I fell in love with the Variax, but found it's full potential is only achieved by hooking it up to a POD XT Live. So I purchased the POD XT Live (XTL).
Reviews for the XTL are mixed. Many reviewers complain about the thin, muddy sound...I found the same thing to be true during the first 1/2 hour I used the XTL. I was very disappointed to say the least... Then, I changed the output setup from Amp to Studio Direct and everything changed completely...and for the better!
After 10+ hours of fiddling around with the XTL, I find the amp models are superior and the modulation and delay effects are great. I have not spent much time with the included add-on effects, but what really has be jazzed is how easy it is to create/modify XTL patches to include
amps, EQ, and Variax settings. I quickly created patches that I use to jump from Hard Rock sounds (i.e., Plexi amp, EQ, Variax Les Paul) to mellow acoustic sounds (i.e., no amp, EQ, Variax D28). To my knowledge, in the history of guitar, this has never been possible. I figure that if every serious guitarist tried out this combo, they would buy it.
IMHO, the POD XTL amp models and general sound quality is a step above the competition. It may not be the Swiss army knife that the GNX4 workstation is, it may not be as easy as the VAMP to quickly go from one amp to another (without patches), but as an amp modeler, it kicks! Add in the Variax element, and purchasing the XTL is a no-brainier.
