We purchased this drum kit for our 7-year-old son. The size is just right with acceptable hardware adjustments in case your child is smaller and can also be adjusted for your child as s/he grows. Most kids could play this set into middle school, but I wouldn't recommend it if they are already 10 or older (go with a full size set). The kit did not come with instructions, but the set is pretty easy to assemble if you have ever been exposed to drum kits. If not, there is a very good online instruction video you can view through the Ludwig website. The drum shells and heads are pretty good quality and can be tuned to generate your personal preference of sound. The crash/ride cymbal stand is stable but won't get tall enough for a standard sized kit. The snare stand is stable, and the snare is okay. You can't tell a major difference if the snares are engaged or not. The hi hat stand is okay, but we have had issues with the top clasp continually coming unscrewed causing the top hi hat cymbal to collapse during frequent play. The single drum pedal is okay if you're not trying to use the pedal at a fast tempo. If you speed up your tempo with the kick drum, it doesn't perform that well. We're looking at upgrading to a chain drive drum pedal (this one has a strap). The crash/ride cymbal and hi hat cymbals that come with the set are toy quality. We spent the extra money to upgrade to a Paiste PST 3 starter set with an 18" crash/ride and 13" hi hat cymbals. These are good quality cymbals. However, we ended up buying a separate Paiste PST 5 21" groove ride cymbal and stand later. We bought the blue colored set. The shells look like a quality set. The black bass kick drum head and chrome colored hardware really make the blue shells look great. We will be able to keep and use the shells and kit hardware for several years. If you think your child is really going to be serious and you can invest a little extra money, I would definitely recommend buying an upgraded cymbal set (ideally, something with hi hats, a crash and a ride). The Paiste PST 3 and 5 cymbals we bought have a nice sound and look much more expensive than they were. If you add the extra cymbal, you'll also need to add a cymbal stand. Overall, I would purchase this set again in a heartbeat, but plan on spending some extra money to upgrade your cymbals if your child takes this seriously.
The drum set was fun and great for beginners.
