These work great for our small school for the blind, they are plenty loud for our sideline work (we don't march), and they've been knocked over from very tall stands more times than I can count and no hardware or shell has suffered at all. One stand basket has even snapped in half in a fall but the snare drums still seems unharmed! One or two have fallen off the back of a "Mule" cart and I can't tell you which ones. The snare throws are really beefy and don't stick out where they'd be vulnerable.
Bottom line, these are great for small school bands - if you've got a band at a level that needs anything more than this, I don't think you'd be reading this review to start with. They don't have quite the same tight crack as the kevlar-head high-tension snare drums, but you can crank down the top heads with the included long-handled key and get rid of most of the ring and have very good stick feel. I haven't tried different heads or rings on them yet, but I'm sure there's some head combination that sounds even better. Be prepared to tune them, they leave both heads pretty loose from the factory.
The Mapex stands they recommend for these are Ok, like I said one of the baskets snapped in a fall. The bottom part is great and the ball joint is nice, but the basket doesn't hold on to the snares reliably, and the one 1/4" bolt between the basket and base is what snapped in two. I emailed Mapex support for the part and never heard back. Then again, if you won't have students constantly knocking over the stands on a wood floor, they'll probably work just fine.
One other note, it can sound amazing on a kit if you're looking for the deep thumpy sound (think Mayer's "I Don't Trust Myself" live, at least after the intro). I put a 1/4" stack of papers on the top head to get the sound I like for kit.
