Marlin Lesher Oboe ReedMarlin Lesher reeds hold up to the most discriminating of tastes. Beautifully cut and wound, they produce a great tone.

This reed is by far the best reed I have used. I have been playing oboe for a while and I have found this reed a very flexible reed. It takes some time to break into it, but then it produces a beautiful tone. The price is good, the quality is fine, and the different colors make this reed so much special.
In the beginning, I thought this reed was awesome. However, I soon saw the light. These reeds dry up and crack within 2 weeks or so and I have always found these reeds to produce a shaky and unpredictable(as far as tuning goes). They need a lot of adjustment to make them livable and aren't worth the effort. To any student out there, I suggest the Chatier long scrape reeds. MUCH better than these.
Unfortunately for me, I wasn't introduced to Lesher reeds until just a few months ago, when I randomly picked out about three brands to try. These reeds are quite simply one of the best, professionally-made or not. Within seconds of being damp they can produce a good tone (for those quick two-seconds-before-the-conert reed disasters - they happen to all of us). The cork is usually nice and soft, and typically requires little or no cork grease, something I always find very convenient. A drawback is that you usually don't get very high-quality wood with these reeds. But they manage perfectly fine and last a long, long time. Also, the thread is just plain cool. You just never see two-colored threads. Awesome.
I am an oboist and former band director who now plays in pit orchestras and at church. I know how to make my own reeds, but often find I would rather spend my time playing rather than making reeds. The Lesher reeds are ready to play as soon as you buy them. I do agree that they need a good soak to play nicely. They have a nice, open tone quality (not stuffy or leaky like many commercially available reeds) and they are easy to articulate (it is difficult to tongue crisply on some reeds). Intonation is consistent throughout the range of the oboe, whereas some reeds sag or have wild variations in pitch in the middle range (usually around Bb or C above middle C). Low notes (middle c and lower) come out with ease, even when tonguing. I do usually buy a reed that is a degree harder than I need and scrape it down a bit to suit me best.
This reed is one of my personal favorites! This reed is very reliable! It is almost perfect when you take it out of the package. It is one of the best commercially made reeds that I have ever used. I find that these reeds always come in handy the day of a concert when you just broke your regular reed. (We have all been there.) Of course everyone has different reed needs but I find that this reed is great for almost every student player looking for a great reed.
