I was initially going to buy the Martin HD-28 because I assumed a higher price tag meant a better guitar. The HD-28 is everything it claims to be and it sounded great. But when I played them side by side for three hours in a music store, I realized the D-28 was the one for me! No frills, no fancy herringbone trimwork, a plain old black pickguard (this was a big hang-up for me at first, but not now!), no famous scalloped X bracing, etc. The D-28 just had an awesome and clear tone that filled the room with a sound that no one can really and truly describe until he/she strums a chord. I know now why it is called "The Cannon"! The aroma of the rosewood is even deeper than my D-15 and everytime I open the custom case the smell of the shiny rosewood just fills the room. I needed the deeeeep bass sound of the D-28 right now for our band. The D-28 has the "shine", the "sparkle" and the "stage presence" that now really sets me apart from all the other members of our band. I have been playing guitar in a band for many, many years, and I have seen and played all kinds of great guitars. But please, don't hesitate, go ahead and buy this Martin D-28 from WWBW and give it a chance. I promise that you will get the most friendly customer service and advice, the best price and also have the best guitar you can find anywhere. Period. That's what I'm talking about!
I originally had ordered a Gibson Advanced Jumbo and between the buzzing frets and lack luster sound I sent it back after a week of trying to like it. When I got the D-28 I was blown away by the deep bass, crystal clear treble rich midrange. It is not the most spectacular wood I've ever seen and I was a little disappointed in the striped ebony fretboard but only because of the looks not the function. I play mostly with friends just for fun and two of the guys I play with who own a D41 and D45 are always asking it they can trade guitars with me! Simply put I love this guitar and I play it 3 times as much as any other guitar I've ever owned. Also the service at WWBW was very very good.
I recently purchased a new Martin D28 and it?s fulfilled all of my expectations. I?ve played all the top bran name acoustics and I kept coming back to Martin. The quality and tone is like no other I?ve heard. Yes, you?re going to pay more, but the value will always stay with the Martin name. Recommend the D28 for any player out there that?s serious about his/her music.
When I used to play in the church choir folk group in 1976 and two other members had these Martin D-12-28's with the two piece backs. I used to envy them. I would go to Grinnels at the mall every Saturday and try them out with a few of the songs my guitar teacher taught me. 32 years later I got my own Martin and I am so thrilled. Good things come to those who wait! I cannot play complicated songs like HIDEAWAY, STAIRWAY TO HEAVEN or SUNFLOWER SLOW DRAG, anymore. But I just strum and sing my Mel Bay easy chord song books-And I am in heaven so to speak. My dad was a craftsman in metals from Germany. And he was big on old world craftsman ship. And I saw once on NIGHTLINE that Martin Guitars are made with that Old Country craftsmanship. I am just grateful to own my D28 even if all I can do is sing and play Gospel songs for me and my mom.
I have played the D28 Martin for several years and have heard the hype about the newcomers Taylor, Collings etc. Even though they sound good I would buy the D28 all over again.
