Meinl Weston 14 Travel F TubaThe Meinl Weston 14 Trolley Series F Tuba was designed with the traveling tuba player that needs to keep up their chops. It fits conveniently in the overhead compartment on an airplane and plays extremely well for its size. This 4 rotary valve F tuba has a detachable bell and fits nicely in the included compact case. It comes with a very good practice mute that virtually eliminates any sound other than to the player. When you are touring and your horn is sitting somewhere in a concert hall this fine instrument allows you to keep up on your daily routine.

I got a Meinl-Weston 14 one month ago for travelling around China with my Chinese wife. I increasingly enjoy playing this baby tuba. It is so handy to carry and use with no problem flying as hand luggage. Playing wise, it has more resistance and less resonance than full size F tuba, but once one gets used to its feel, it can produce an amazingly good tone right into the low register. No problem with low C on this horn. I have played it out and it works well with quintet, but does not have sufficient power to play bass in concert band. If blown really hard it does start sounding more trombone like, which may make it a good cimbasso substitute in orchestra, but I have yet to try. For solo recital I think it would work fine and it is so nice to be able to play tuba standing with no strain from the weight - the tuba itself only weighs 3.5kg. The travel tuba is surprisingly compact ?smaller than a euphonium, cleverly done by looping the tubing around three times, instead of once on a full size F. The mute is very effective ? good enough that I think one could play in the same room as someone sleeping without waking them. There is also the intermediate option to play without attaching the bell to reduce the volume if practicing in a hotel room. The included carry case seems well made and strong with either the option of back-pack straps, or handles, both of which I use. This tuba may seem expensive for its diminutive size, but it is wonderfully made and allows whole new practice/performance options, so any buyer is unlikely to regret. I would not want to be without mine!
