I just got the tuba, so it is difficult to tell how things will go in the long term, but the fundamental reason that I bought it in the first place is still there: a wonderful sound. It is warm and full and it fills a lot of rooms, big and small. The pistons worked well right out of the packaging. And it was shipped on so many plastic pillows that I don't think it would have gotten damaged unless they ran over the box. The finish is perfect, the horn is dent-free, and it's a tuba I think can grow in my professional career.
This is my first tuba I have ever owned, and Ive had it for about a year so far. Ive used it in a brass quintet, multiple small and large wind ensembles, concert bands, and even a big band ensemble. Its fit in with all of these, and Im very pleased so far. The flexibility of the horn is what I have been most impressed with, as its not too heavy for the small ensemble and it most definitely holds its own within the wind band. In fact, I feel like playing right now....
I've played for about 20 years now, and have played nothing but the 2145 for close to 7 years. I have yet to find a situation into which this instrument does not fit. Some of the heavy orchestral stuff that I play makes me wish for one of the big bore monsters, but I somehow seem to plug right along on my "little" Meinl. This horn is a great all-around muliti tasker.
When I played this horn in the Navy, we had problems with the valve guides. They were really poorly made and allowed the valve to turn and eventually caused the valve to get stuck. If they fixed the problem, great!. But would check on that first
This is an update to the review I did earlier. Having now had the tuba for a significant time, I can now say that my initial comments were correct. It has a large, expansive sound that blends well with groups or stands out in a unique way. There are intonation difficulties that come if you're used to lipping up or down. You don't need to do that on this tuba. The notes that do have some problems are easily fixed by changing fingerings. The tuba responds to a breath of air, and produces resonant tones right up to fff. Unfortunately, I also have reason to say it doesn't dent easily either. There is one minor flaw I've come up against: the finger ring wears easily, and must be frequently adjusted. Check this horn out for a first CC tuba. I don't think you'll be disappointed.
