This horn plays dark with a lot of fundamental, and a traditional dark German sound. If you are a Music Education major or an adult who wants one that is within financial reach, this horn would do the job. My observations while testing this horn was that it is resistant, due to its high copper mixture, and thick and heavy for robust and powerful sound. I personally like this horn, despite some players who don't.
I played on an old one of these horns. I normally play bass trombone in the jazz ensemble, but my band director thought it would be great if I could play tuba for a couple of charts that called for tuba. It was the oldest tuba at my high school, but not bad at all. With a minimum of practice, I could get a pretty good sound out the horn. I did find it difficult getting the partials to slot (partials on tuba are closer together than those on trombone, given the same register). Eventually, my thin, reedy sound darkened up. I learned to relax on the big mouthpiece. The pedals and contra notes can really rattle on this horn. I never actually played it n jazz, but I did play it in a quintet setting. It's very easy to get a compact, dark sound with a little practice.
This horn is the ideal tuba for the high school serious student. The big sound and dark color is very impressive and is hard to match on a 4/4 B horn. The ability to carry a large ensemble with two good students on these horns is no small task. But this horn is up to the challenge.
