This is the first metal mouthpeice I have tried. I have been playing on a hard rubber meyer 9 for a few years. I ordered the Metal Meyere 7j, but it just wasn't what I was looking for. It had an almost identical sound to my hard rubber. I was looking for an edgy grit to my sound, something a little like Sonny Stitt. If your looking to add some edge to your sound this mouthpiece is not for you. However, for someone not looking for that, it has a smooth sound to it, it's easy to manage the low and high registers, and altissimo is easier but still a little bit of a challenge. I would recommend this mouthpeice over a hard rubber meyer but not by much.
Before I got this mouthpiece I played on a Selmer C*. The first time I blew into my horn with this mouthpiece, I knew I had finally found the right mouthpiece after searching for the right one for endless years. I play on a saxophone.com model alto and it has a powerful and centered jazz tone. It takes a strong embouchure to get a sound out of most metal mouthpieces, but with this one all you have to do is find the correct reed strength to fit how you play. I have the 5 medium model and use V16 #3 reeds and I couldn't ask for anything more out of my sound.
I bought a Meyer 7J during the summer. I went from a plastic mouthpiece I had never heard of to this. I took me a while to get used to the way it blows but this mouthpiece is pretty good for jazz. The range of sound is incredible-going from nice airy fat sound to very bright sound. I would recommend this mouthpiece to anyone going from a plastic to a metal for the first time-for ease of play and price!
I've had this piece for a while played on some Rso's studio jazz and some SR's but I still love this one, great price and great playability. Gives you a fat jazzy tone and great range. Alltisimo is easy on it and once you buy it you won't put it down.
I bought this mouthpiece about 3 years ago and I was switching from my plastic mouthpiece to a metal and a guy at the store told me he knew people who had used it. It took me a while to get use to playing on it because it took more air and it's smaller but once u get it down the sound is beautiful and I'm glad I got my hands on it.
