Great sound, easy to blow, huge projection.
For those of you out there professional or otherwise this mouthpiece will give you that Cannonball Aderley/ Phil Woods/ Richie Cole sound you've been searching for. Superb projection/warm lush core/superb response in all registers. Altisimo just pops out. Reed lays up even on both sides of the face so that blowing is a breeze. Best jazz mouthpiece I've come across in long time, possibly the best ever. Great for r&b as well as jazz. Spend the money, you won't be disappointed.
I tested out the Meyer Richie Cole Alto, Meyer G Series 5M Alto, and the Yanagisawa Hard Rubber Alto #5 mouthpieces. I chose the Meyer G Series 5M since it is the closest thing to my 1972 vintage Meyer 5M that I have played for all these years. The Richie Cole was not as clear and crisp for me. It felt a little fuzzy. Mouthpieces are very subjective however based on so many factors like reed, ligature, the person, etc.
This is definitely one of the best jazz mouthpieces I have ever played. My regular Meyer 5M was just not cutting it anymore. My friend let me try his little collection of jazz mouthpieces. I lined them up and closed my eyes. Played each one, one at a time. The Richie Cole model Meyer totally blew me away. This Mouthpiece is not reed picky, absolutely free blowing and can play way up into the stratosphere in the altissimo register. Not only is the response good, but its intonation is spot on. These qualities packed into one mouthpiece allow for an unsurpassed level of expression and can adjust to any tonality. This mouthpiece in combination with my Mark VI beats everything else I have tried.
Good intonation, free-blowing, solid in all registers, good tonal center. I have some of my more advanced students playing this Meyer and doing well on it. Now if I can just Richie's technique too!
