Citizen Philanthropy Revives Music Education in Nation’s Public Schools
The Woodwind & Brasswind and DonorsChoose.org Aid Music Programs by Launching Initiative to Support 25th Music In Our Schools Month
South Bend, IN March 17, 2010—Musical instrument retailer, The Woodwind & Brasswind, is partnering with national non-profit DonorsChoose.org to support Music In Our Schools Month by hosting The Giving Page during the month of March. As part of an ongoing collaboration between the two organizations during which over 1,500 projects have been filled, the page was created in response to budget cuts in music education and connects visitors to music programs currently seeking aid through DonorsChoose.org. Anyone who recognizes the importance of music education in young people’s lives is encouraged to visit and make a donation.
Since 2000, online charity DonorsChoose.org has acted as liaison between students in need of classroom supplies and willing donors. Teachers post requests on the website then donors choose a project to support from those listed on DonorsChoose.org. DonorsChoose.org delivers the materials to the schools and sends photos and thank-you letters to the donors from the classrooms they chose to help.
Americans have contributed nearly $50 million to fund projects, benefiting over 3 million students. Nearly 86% of all projects supported through DonorsChoose.org help fund schools in high-need communities.
Although DonorsChoose.org fulfills requests from teachers of every grade level and academic subject, The Woodwind and Brasswind is focused this March on enriching music education in high-need schools to observe The National Association for Music Education’s annual Music In Our Schools Month. With budget cuts an ongoing reality, educators and students alike must look to citizens to keep music alive in public schools. All donations are tax-deductible.

About DonorsChoose: DonorsChoose.org grew out of a Bronx high school where teachers experienced first-hand the scarcity of learning materials in our public schools. Charles Best, then a social studies teacher, sensed that many people would like to help distressed public schools, but were frustrated by a lack of influence over their donations. He created DonorsChoose.org in 2000 so that individuals could connect directly with classrooms in need. Their mission is to improve public education by empowering every teacher to be a change-maker and enabling any citizen to be a philanthropist.
