I have a perfect wood bottom 40-year-old mute (that I purchased new - no idea of the manufacturer) that always had "the" sound for me, even after getting a Tom Crown to use in high school and college just because everyone else had one. Unfortunatly, this old mute would get swallowed up in the bell of my Schilke X4Lb and I didn't want to "mess with it", replacing corks or whatever - besides, it fits my Bach perfectly. ANYWAY, I wanted another mute like this that would fit the 5" #1 taper Schilke bell and found it in this mute. Just a more organic, warm, fat sound than your typical "tinny" Tom Crown or H&B straight. Also, the "non-leading edge rim" fiber body doesn't scratch or dent the bell in slightly careless/rushed applications (gold plated beryllium). Should be the "standard" IMHO.
