If you love the dark, husky, rich tenor sound, then this is for you. I bought the 7* for me and it made a world of difference than using my hunk-of-junk stock piece. Wow. This is THE best piece on the market for tenor right now.
What seems like many years ago, I bought an Otto Link NY model 8 while I was in college. I tried three other regular Otto Links and each one of them sounded completely different. Apparently they?re inconsistent. If you're going to buy one I suggest trying at lease 4 or 5 of the same model, and the same facing because they will sound different. I loved the one I bought though. Then I lost it and tried something else. Three years ago I bought an Otto Link NY model 9*. The facing was too big and instead of getting a smaller one I tried several other mouthpieces. Dukoffs, Otto Link RG model, and a Selmer Soloist F. I played the Soloist the most. I loved the dark, dry, mellow tone. I've been playing it up until recently when I started playing in a small jazz and blues club where I didn't have a mic. I wasn't loud enough so tonight I got out my 9* and played it for just a minute or two and it already sounds amazingly better, and louder. I want loud but not Dukoff loud with that bright pop thing in it. Miles said that Trane was the loudest tenor player he ever heard, and Trane used an Otto Link 5*. Compared to the Soloist the Link is brighter. I can control it now; it's not too big for me anymore. It sounds big and warm. It's got that metallic ring over the big fat bottom, or a dark metal mouthpiece sound. I've even got some edge from it with the Rico Jazz Select Filed 2 med reed.
Wow! What a great mouthpiece!! The best I've ever played. It has a great sound high or low. It also gives you amazing control of the notes you?re playing. I especially like the way I can play low C, B and Bb with this piece. The notes stay strong and solid without going out of tune. My teacher noticed a difference in my playing right away. Overall, it's the best on the market. I love the rich sound, and the darkness of the husky. This is the mouthpiece for you!
Many, many years ago I played on an Otto-Link Metal Mouthpiece 7* on a Selmer Mark VI Tenor, I found it a little difficult to control in the extreme lower and upper registers. I then switched to a Selmer Metal D* it was OK except for the extreme upper register. So recently I thought I would try the Otto Link Metal New York Series 7* with a Rico Jazz Select 3S on the same Mark VI and it is perfect! The sound is rich, but bright enough with enough power that it can cut through it all when necessary, yet it can also provide a sweet sound when needed. It is never harsh sounding! The response down low is totally controlable and it plays well in the altissimo range as well. I have recently started playing on an Otto Link Hard Rubber 8* on my Soprano and it is working out very well. Mouthpiece selection is very personal and results can vary depending on the horn and physical characteristics of the player, but this one is a winner for me. The Woodwind & Brasswind is a great company to deal with, I have bought many instruments and accessories over the years, they have always been a pleasure to work with.
I ordered an 8* and I am very happy with it. In my opinion it beats a Berg Larsen in the dark and big sound category. This mouthpiece is not for the people who own bright mouthpieces unless you want the husky New York sound. I use a Vandoren 3.5's and I just love the sound. People debate the standard link ligature but I think it is the best to achieve the New York sound Otto Link aimed for. A Rovner somewhat mutes the sound some so I would not recommend that ligature for this mouthpiece. Production quality is not very consistent so try out a lot of the same facing to see which one you like best. I just ordered the 8* star hoping it would have a good sound. It played awesome. Berg Larsen has many chamber options from brilliant to mellow sounds (darker) so I compared the NY Otto Link to my old Berg Larsen facings: 120-3 SMS which is a French facing. Anyways good luck and I hope you love the mouthpiece. I recommend it. IT?S AWESOME!
