I just got this mouthpiece today as an early Christmas gift and Wow! I've been playing on an old beat up blue Vandoren T55 with a 1940's Martin Melody Master Tenor sax. The difference between the T55 and the Otto Link is MASSIVE! The Otto Link sounds so soft and beautiful when you play with softer air and sings the lower octave notes with ease. And when I play loud with a lot of air I have no trouble keeping it in tune, where as with the T55 I'd have to adjust my mouth every single note. This is the first Metal mouthpiece I?ve gotten and I plan to make it my last. It does everything I need. It sings the lower octave notes with amazing sound and screams the altissimo notes. Perfect for anybody who wants a professional metal mouthpiece, and it?s not too pricey either. Recommended to anyone who wants a metal mouth piece.
The big NY chamber gives the potential for some of the deepest, richest sounds possible out of a tenor, but the imprecise construction means that additional work on the piece should be anticipated in order to realize that potential. Budget accordingly. Procedures to true the table and side rails, and to eliminate the *very* large window step are worthwhile to improve response and counteract the tendency for the piece to be resistant and stuffy towards the low end. My piece has a visibly uneven rollover baffle, but that seems not to affect it much because of the fault-tolerant characteristics of the low baffle. I'm happy with the piece post-procedure (just wish I'd done it sooner), but I would be nonplussed at having to do that additional work on a piece that costs what the New York Links are going for today. Their prices are skyrocketing in a way that I frankly do not think is justified without a drastic improvement in precision.
I have spent time with several mouthpieces I purchase from WWB. Beechler, Dukoff, Berg, Selmer Soloist, HR link and bunch of ligatures, but they all sit a box.
Many, many years ago I played on an Otto-Link Metal Mouthpiece 7* on a Selmer Mark VI Tenor, I found it a little difficult to control in the extreme lower and upper registers. I then switched to a Selmer Metal D* it was OK except for the extreme upper register. So recently I thought I would try the Otto Link Metal New York Series 7* with a Rico Jazz Select 3S on the same Mark VI and it is perfect! The sound is rich, but bright enough with enough power that it can cut through it all when necessary, yet it can also provide a sweet sound when needed. It is never harsh sounding! The response down low is totally controlable and it plays well in the altissimo range as well. I have recently started playing on an Otto Link Hard Rubber 8* on my Soprano and it is working out very well. Mouthpiece selection is very personal and results can vary depending on the horn and physical characteristics of the player, but this one is a winner for me. The Woodwind & Brasswind is a great company to deal with, I have bought many instruments and accessories over the years, they have always been a pleasure to work with.
I have used this mouthpiece for about six years and it is amazing. I always use it for jazz. I have used a ton of different mouthpieces and none of them even come close to the Otto Link. It has a great range and excellent support, I also like to try several different brands of reeds and they all fit well on the mouthpiece. It is durable and accommodates a vide variety of dynamics. The only thing that I did not like at first was that I had a lot of vibration on my top row of teeth, but I quickly and easily fixed that by buying a rubber mouthpiece patch. They are really cheap, and I have had the same one on it for six years, so they will hold up fine, even when you wash your mouthpiece.
