I don't have a modern Link, I have a metal FL 8*. But in my opinion, the lig that seems to work the best overall for all Links is the Silver Selmer Ligature for metal mpcs. They are inexpensive, they don't slip and they work. Try it you'll like it and the WWBW still sells them. I am waiting for the WWBW to get the new "Vintage" Links in metal and HR to try them out.
Many years ago I bought an Otto-Link 7* for my Selmer Mark VI Tenor, I found it was a little too bright and harsh. I recently decided to try The Otto Link New York Series Tenor Mouthpiece after buying an Otto-Link Hard Rubber 8* for my Soprano and liking it very much. The New York Series 7* is working out great on my tenor (same Mark VI), it has excellent response in the low register as well as the altissimo range. The sound is full with enough edge to cut through it all when necessary, yet it is capable of sounding sweet when desired. I am using a Rico Jazz Select 3S reed and a Rovner Ligature. I have been purchasing instruments and accessories from Woodwind & Brasswind for about the last 10 years and they have always been a pleasure to work with.
Seems to be a great player. I played a Yani mp for years until I woke up one day and hated my 'bright' sound. I tried it on a whim even with all the pos/(mostly negatives) I've read about new Otto Links on saxontheweb forum. This is a gutsy piece. Altissimo is effortless. Tone, intonation, ease of playing all get high marks from me. I've never played a Florida model so comparison is a mute point. I will say though upon close inspection interior finish is rough at best (scary). Lots of grinding marks (from a dremel I assume). The rails seem a bit uneven. Also the heel of the piece is high giving it a slight concavity. Air doesn't seem to be escaping though. I'm using a Rovner dark lig with a piece of aluminum foil between the reed/lig to brighten it up ever so slightly. The orig. lig seemed to make it sound a little stuffy. I'm playing a 2-21/2 reed. I'm going to buy a 6 opening piece to see if it'll take a harder reed as my Jody Jazz ESP .100(too bright for me) works well with 31/2 as did my Yani and every other mp I have occasionally used. With all the negatives listed it still plays awesome.
The Link NY allows me to express myself and produce a tone that symbolizes the consciousness of love, empathy, selflessness, and devotion.
Brought my Keilwerth EX-90 to life. Sounded great on a link6, but the metal NY 6* has given it a better projected, raspy, complicated (in a good way) sound that is anything but vanilla. A great mouthpiece if you've been playing for a long time, but want something to "open up" the horn just a bit more.
