I have used this mouthpiece for about six years and it is amazing. I always use it for jazz. I have used a ton of different mouthpieces and none of them even come close to the Otto Link. It has a great range and excellent support, I also like to try several different brands of reeds and they all fit well on the mouthpiece. It is durable and accommodates a vide variety of dynamics. The only thing that I did not like at first was that I had a lot of vibration on my top row of teeth, but I quickly and easily fixed that by buying a rubber mouthpiece patch. They are really cheap, and I have had the same one on it for six years, so they will hold up fine, even when you wash your mouthpiece.
Seems to be a great player. I played a Yani mp for years until I woke up one day and hated my 'bright' sound. I tried it on a whim even with all the pos/(mostly negatives) I've read about new Otto Links on saxontheweb forum. This is a gutsy piece. Altissimo is effortless. Tone, intonation, ease of playing all get high marks from me. I've never played a Florida model so comparison is a mute point. I will say though upon close inspection interior finish is rough at best (scary). Lots of grinding marks (from a dremel I assume). The rails seem a bit uneven. Also the heel of the piece is high giving it a slight concavity. Air doesn't seem to be escaping though. I'm using a Rovner dark lig with a piece of aluminum foil between the reed/lig to brighten it up ever so slightly. The orig. lig seemed to make it sound a little stuffy. I'm playing a 2-21/2 reed. I'm going to buy a 6 opening piece to see if it'll take a harder reed as my Jody Jazz ESP .100(too bright for me) works well with 31/2 as did my Yani and every other mp I have occasionally used. With all the negatives listed it still plays awesome.
Many years ago I bought an Otto-Link 7* for my Selmer Mark VI Tenor, I found it was a little too bright and harsh. I recently decided to try The Otto Link New York Series Tenor Mouthpiece after buying an Otto-Link Hard Rubber 8* for my Soprano and liking it very much. The New York Series 7* is working out great on my tenor (same Mark VI), it has excellent response in the low register as well as the altissimo range. The sound is full with enough edge to cut through it all when necessary, yet it is capable of sounding sweet when desired. I am using a Rico Jazz Select 3S reed and a Rovner Ligature. I have been purchasing instruments and accessories from Woodwind & Brasswind for about the last 10 years and they have always been a pleasure to work with.
I just got this mouthpiece today as an early Christmas gift and Wow! I've been playing on an old beat up blue Vandoren T55 with a 1940's Martin Melody Master Tenor sax. The difference between the T55 and the Otto Link is MASSIVE! The Otto Link sounds so soft and beautiful when you play with softer air and sings the lower octave notes with ease. And when I play loud with a lot of air I have no trouble keeping it in tune, where as with the T55 I'd have to adjust my mouth every single note. This is the first Metal mouthpiece I?ve gotten and I plan to make it my last. It does everything I need. It sings the lower octave notes with amazing sound and screams the altissimo notes. Perfect for anybody who wants a professional metal mouthpiece, and it?s not too pricey either. Recommended to anyone who wants a metal mouth piece.
I have played several mouthpieces through out the years and have had success with several manufacturers. I played a Rico Royal Graftonite B7 and Metalite M7, Selmer Soloist J, Beechler Diamond Inlay S10S, Bobby Dukoff D10, Berg Larsen 105/0M, all of these mouthpieces have fine response but none of them can compare to the power and versatility you get from an Otto Link!! I am a permanent endorser of these mouthpieces; I purchased the Super Tone Master 8 and Super Tone Master NY 8 with an Oleg ligature for each about a week ago. I played on the Berg Larsen and Dukoff I had been playing on for the past 3-years and then switched to the two Otto Links. Don't get me wrong Berg Larsen and Bobby Dukoff make some pretty powerful mouthpieces, but the Otto Links simply have more power, especially the NY model. When I blew into the NY 8 the tone was so big it literally shook the floor!! That is how powerful these mouthpieces are!! A word of advice though, if you are used to playing smaller bored mouthpieces, try a softer reed on the mouthpiece then move up to stronger reeds as you get used to the mouthpiece, this will make things a lot easier and allow you to develop a more powerful tone with the mouthpiece.
