Brought my Keilwerth EX-90 to life. Sounded great on a link6, but the metal NY 6* has given it a better projected, raspy, complicated (in a good way) sound that is anything but vanilla. A great mouthpiece if you've been playing for a long time, but want something to "open up" the horn just a bit more.
I have the Otto Link Super Tone Master 7* (0.105") and it is the most excellent piece I have tried in its price range!! It has a darker, husky sound than my Vandoren V16 T75, which is a well balanced, clean sounding piece with good intonation, and the optimum ligature for it is a nice plus, but that setup is considerably more expensive.
Seems to be a great player. I played a Yani mp for years until I woke up one day and hated my 'bright' sound. I tried it on a whim even with all the pos/(mostly negatives) I've read about new Otto Links on saxontheweb forum. This is a gutsy piece. Altissimo is effortless. Tone, intonation, ease of playing all get high marks from me. I've never played a Florida model so comparison is a mute point. I will say though upon close inspection interior finish is rough at best (scary). Lots of grinding marks (from a dremel I assume). The rails seem a bit uneven. Also the heel of the piece is high giving it a slight concavity. Air doesn't seem to be escaping though. I'm using a Rovner dark lig with a piece of aluminum foil between the reed/lig to brighten it up ever so slightly. The orig. lig seemed to make it sound a little stuffy. I'm playing a 2-21/2 reed. I'm going to buy a 6 opening piece to see if it'll take a harder reed as my Jody Jazz ESP .100(too bright for me) works well with 31/2 as did my Yani and every other mp I have occasionally used. With all the negatives listed it still plays awesome.
What seems like many years ago, I bought an Otto Link NY model 8 while I was in college. I tried three other regular Otto Links and each one of them sounded completely different. Apparently they?re inconsistent. If you're going to buy one I suggest trying at lease 4 or 5 of the same model, and the same facing because they will sound different. I loved the one I bought though. Then I lost it and tried something else. Three years ago I bought an Otto Link NY model 9*. The facing was too big and instead of getting a smaller one I tried several other mouthpieces. Dukoffs, Otto Link RG model, and a Selmer Soloist F. I played the Soloist the most. I loved the dark, dry, mellow tone. I've been playing it up until recently when I started playing in a small jazz and blues club where I didn't have a mic. I wasn't loud enough so tonight I got out my 9* and played it for just a minute or two and it already sounds amazingly better, and louder. I want loud but not Dukoff loud with that bright pop thing in it. Miles said that Trane was the loudest tenor player he ever heard, and Trane used an Otto Link 5*. Compared to the Soloist the Link is brighter. I can control it now; it's not too big for me anymore. It sounds big and warm. It's got that metallic ring over the big fat bottom, or a dark metal mouthpiece sound. I've even got some edge from it with the Rico Jazz Select Filed 2 med reed.
I have spent time with several mouthpieces I purchase from WWB. Beechler, Dukoff, Berg, Selmer Soloist, HR link and bunch of ligatures, but they all sit a box.
