I got one of these less than a week ago. I have played many different era's of the Otto Link STM, and currently use a 90's period hard rubber Link. This Otto Link Vintage series is the deepest and thickest sounding mputhpiece I have ever used since my beloved Florida STM Link was irreparably damaged. It helps get the Gene Ammons/John Coltrane mix I yearn for. Very deep and full sounding to me, even without subtone. This is now my new main MP.
I reached the point before I tried this mouthpiece where I've tried so many different mouthpieces that I'd come to the conclusion that there truely is not one mouthpiece that does everything though some manufacturers may claim theirs do. They may cover the gamet of what some players want to do with their sound but that doesn't mean that they want to cover every sax sound that's ever been created nor can they. Despite what they may believe about themselves. I have come across some very fine mouthpieces nevertheless. Some really amazing ones. And this is one of them. Really easy to play with a warm resonance and lots of tonal colors. A nice balance between bright and dark. I can go either way with it. I've been told I have a west coast sound with it. I suppose they may be thinking of Dexter Gordon. By my own estimation I've also covered a tonal range from Wayne Shorter and Branford Marsalis to something similar to Michael Brecker though none of them exact. Be honest. Is anyone ever really exactly a copy of someone else's sound? And why would someone want to be? All of the sax players I've mentioned at one time played Otto Links when they were developing their sound so it shouldn't be surprising the same piece can do all of them. I recommend giving this excellent mouthpiece a try.
