I have now had this instrument just short of a year. I have had no problems at all with it that could not be adjusted for. I did run into an issue with the C# and D above the staff being extremely sharp. I have closed the half hole completely in hopes of lowering the pitch. That was not enough. I have to intentionally lower the pitch on each note as I play to an extreme measure. This may just be an issue with my particular instrument. I still stand by the craftsmanship of the Patricola firm and the beauty and fluid motion of the keys, mostly even scale, and ease of response in all registers. Good luck oboe buying. I have the one I will need for at least the next ten or fifteen years.
I was lucky enough to actually go to WWBW and spent 4 hours trying top oboes. I've had a Laubin for 33 years and had a Loree for 2 years. I've had the Patricola now for 8 months and love it. The tone is centered and stable. It is easy to hit the low b, bflat at piano. The air moves through the instrument easily and produces the best sound of all the oboes I've played. A major bonus is that the keys of the right hand are set slightly closer together, which makes it much easier for me. I am a female with medium to large hands. The lie of the keys under the right hand is really a major point for anyone who plays enough that overuse injuries become an issue. PLUS, the rosewood, (which I chose) has a lovely sound, and talk about comments in orchestras, band, and solo work!
This is the best oboe I have ever tried. The only one better that I have owned is a Laubin, but those are $6-7000. For the money and the quality of a hand made instrument this is by far my favorite. The tone is perfect (especially for a A440). There is a clear deep rich sound and because the wood is aged, it won't crack as easily as a Loree.
This is one of the best oboes out there and I am a professional oboist in the NY, Phil area and I would give 2 thumbs up for this awesome piece of art.
OK, I admit it, I am a lazy oboist. I want the oboe to do as music work for me as possible. Well, that?s exactly what my Rosewood Patricola S6 Ev does? it plays in tune with a consistent sound in all registers, all by its self. Finally, I can have a ?bad reed day? and not get frustrated. My instrument is very forgiving, without being too flexible; and yet maintains enough flexibility to play with expression. I have a long history of playing on ?dark? sounding oboes: Chauvet AC, Gordet -Kreul, Loree -AK, and Laubin -an oldie from Alfred?s hands. The Rosewood Patricola has a ?somewhat dark? sound with quit a lot of carrying power, but not ?muffled? ?as my old Laubin had. The best part is this? I did not have to wait 8 years, and I purchased mine on sale ?one of those things that happen rarely.
This oboe is totally amazing. The sound is warm and full; it is good in both intimate chamber or chorus settings as well as able to carry an orchestra. I love the rosewood.
A MAJOR plus of the Patricola oboes is that the right hand position is better. This is a notorious problem for oboes, and in this instrument the reach for the 3rd and fourth fingers is just little smaller; this makes it perfect for those of us who do not have gigantic male hands. It makes all the cross-fingering much easier. The instrument is slightly lighter than the African grenadilla; again useful for those of use who aren't giant sized humans.
I love this instrument. I'd get it again in a heartbeat.
I have tried the Patricola Rosewood and am still sorry that I could not afford to purchase it in addition to my Covey. The rosewood, colour of the silver plating, shape of the keys, the countersunk post-beds, the humidifier and agrometer, the case cover with a flap underneath the zipper thus "really" keeping out the cold and the large pouch make you want to cuddle this oboe; hug the makers for doing such a superb job. The tone is stable and has the timbre of a mezo-soprano, not shrill nor dark. Projection is adequate for small orchestra, but because of it's unique sound will stand out in any musical grouping. The mechanics are easy on the hands. Slightly lowering of the A key, the one curling up over the right hand G# would be nice for small hands but will not be an issue for most hands. A georgeous instrument, a pleasure to practice on and the envy of any woodwind player.
This instrument is the first I've found that actually bothered to display the specifications I was looking for. 3rd octave key, etc. Plus the instrument pictures are clear as opposed to the blurry ones I've seen on here that don't tell me anything. I also am very happy about the option to buy rosewood as I am much in love with the tone rosewood instruments produce.
I couldn't believe the response of this oboe. I tried many brands and styles, but I kept coming back to this professional model. Not only is the rosewood gorgeous, but the sound is sweet, round, full, and fluid. The scale is very even, meaning that the low notes are just as easy as the high notes. I recommend this oboe to anyone who is wanting to go forward in their muscial studies!
It is a very beautiful instrument it has the sound of an angel. It is a better choice to have gold keys but that?s alright. The instrument is very well played in chamber groups and orchestras. Buy from here you will NOT regret it.
While looking for a new oboe (coming from a used but good Loree), I tried everything I could get my hands on. The Marigaux was too sweet, Yamaha a little hard to control, Fossatti not stable enough, Bulgheroni kind of thin, and Lorees felt too resistant. I tried the Patricola on a hunch (I'd never seen or heard one before), and sold my Loree as soon as I played the first few notes. Wonderful, even, scale that requires no favoring. Superb craftsmanship in the wood and keys. Tone is warm but projects, and the biggest thing is just the easy, comfortable feel that you have to experience to understand. I just play better on it because I'm not thinking about the horn (if only I could get reeds that played this well). Including some staples and accessories was a nice touch. I was very impressed all the way around and intend for this instrument to last me another 10 years like the last one. And the price was a nice bonus!
