Established in Chiba, Japan, in 1968, Pearl Flutes is part of the Pearl Musical Instrument Company, which was founded in 1946.
For decades an apprenticeship program at Pearl Flutes has allowed talented masters to pass along their skills to younger flute makers. Many of Pearl's artisans have the distinction of building flutes only at Pearl for their entire career. Pearl's flute range includes fully-handmade professional silver and gold instruments from Chiba as well as mid-range and student instruments, including an alto flute and a Grenaditte composite piccolo manufactured in Pearl Flutes' Taiwan production facility. Well-known for its popular line of drums and percussion instruments, Pearl is now regarded highly for its flutes as well. This will not surprise anyone who is familiar with the way Pearl combines high-quality craftsmanship, stringent quality control, and attractive pricing with a spirit of innovation. In fact, the Pearl Flutes motto is "A Tradition of Innovation." For example, every Pearl flute is constructed with a "one-piece core-bar" that eliminates many of the wear-and-tear problems associated with traditionally constructed flutes-specifically in the areas of the high C key and the king post next to the F# key. The one-piece core-bar uses a single rod that extends fromhigh C through the king post. This extremely reliable mechanism gives flutists greater comfort, stays in adjustment longer, and is easier to service. Another Pearl innovation is the patented Pinless Mechanism, that offers exceptional smoothness, dependability, and durability. Pinless construction, the foundation of every Pearl flute, eliminates protruding needles that can snag clothing and give easy entry to corroding perspiration and body acids that can cause key binding. Besides this unique pinless construction, Pearl flutes have additional bridge mechanisms that add strength to the instrument. Pearl Flutes also employ socket-head screws inserted from the underside of the key work, preventing perspiration from entering the mechanism. In addition Pearl Flutes manufacture all of their instruments with French-pointed keywork. In their efforts to improve their instruments with feedback from professional musicians, Pearl Flutes collaborated with flute virtuoso Benoit Fromanger to improve the flutes' headjoints. After 2 years of research and prototype testing in Japan, Munich, and Paris, Fromanger finally was satisfied that the Pearl Flutes' headjoints had the sound, intonation, dynamics, excellence of craftsmanship, and power that he was seeking. Japanese quality control and meticulous assembly insure that every Pearl Flute is an investment that will provide a lifetime of musical satisfaction. That is possible because of Pearl Flutes' commitment to accurate intonation, flexible articulation, as well as a beautiful and projecting sound.
