This is a great flute. The headjoint was a bit hard to get used to. Once I did, however, the flute was simply awesome. The Forza headjoint, in my opinion, takes some getting used to (Jupiter and Yamaha flute players beware - ignore first impressions). At first, I got a broad, airy, and hollow tone, but with practice, I now get an extremely focused and rich tone, with wide dynamic range and great control over pitch and tone. It is also very responsive, and double tonguing is now a lot easier for me on this headjoint than the other headjoints that I have tried, in my opinion. It also helps to pay attention to (and practice) the jumps between octaves; that was another of the areas I had trouble in with this Forza headjoint. However, frequent practice cures all ills *smile*. The low notes are nice, strong, and big, while the high notes simply pop out, and don't crack (even pianissimo possibile at 20 degrees Celsius!). Actually, you have to be careful not to overblow them. I found that solid low notes were hard to get until I had a few weeks? practice with this flute. After that, the lower range of the flute sounds well supported, and offers great projection (once you have good breath support). The body of the flute is very sturdy, and the mechanism appears very strong; it also has a lot of tension, causing the keys to feel heavy (not for the weak-hearted; a friend who plays a Powell conservatory constantly complains about the ?clunky? feel of this mechanism). However, with the tension comes a level of responsiveness from the mechanism that I never got with other flutes. Also, the mechanism is bigger than the average flute (due to the extra bridges of the pinless mechanism), and the flute is slightly heavier than comparable flutes (not a cause for concern, though). Overall, the mechanism is very responsive, though it will feel awkward at first. With practice, the mechanism feels flawless under my fingers. I have found that I have used the C# trill key a lot less than I thought I would have when I bought the flute. However, in the relevant situations, it has made the fingerings a lot less awkward, and slightly faster. The headjoint tends to move about and roll in the case, so you might need to pad the case a bit (tissue to protect the headjoint). Other than that, the case is fantastic and sturdy, with a nice solid feel. All in all, I have no problems suggesting this flute to anyone looking for a quality, sturdy, advanced flute. The Pearl Elegante Coda is an extremely good investment; however, don?t expect to be ?wow-ed? straight out of the box. This flute is more of an acquired taste.
I've been enjoying this flute for 3 weeks and find it lures me towards practice. As a professional jazz saxophonist and pretty strong doubler on flute the Elegante Coda seems to fit the bill. The Forza headjoint is fairly easy to blow. The highs pop out so you have to be careful not to over blow them. I used a muramatsu AD (all silver including keys) and it played nicely. I also own a Yamaha 581 which plays well too. Each one has certain characteristics and different overtones. I don't see the Pearl as a compromise in comparison to more expensive flutes. Didn't want to spend 6 to 8 thousand or more so if this Pearl holds up well and doesn't start leaking too fast I feel I have a winner. I also play ceremonies where the flute is really out front with piano or guitar accompaniment. I do regular jazz gigs in Manhattan with the flute including a famous Museum with a cafe and the sound really reverberates. A good flute like this one lets me work the nuances and colors of the sound. I imagine with today's technology there are many flute manufacturers doing very similar work. Pearl has been at it for a long time and may have hit a home run. They may be afraid this competes too well with their next step up flutes which start at close to 6 grand. I don't see much info on this flute. While I have several flutes I keep being drawn to this one and intend to focus my practice time and energy to it. Your experience may be different. I definitely like the offset G and now find my inline models somewhat less natural. Obviously you should see if you can test one for a while. I just didn't want to spend a year on this project since I do have a life. I think I'm going to spend it with Pearl.
