As expected, the go-to amp for tons of metal and hardcore guitarists. I play through a Jackson DK-2, with a Mastertone SPA hum in the bridge, and two EMG-SA's in middle and neck, and a Kelly celestion equipped cab, and I couldn't be happier with the crushing distortion and soaring leads. The clean channel got dirty at higher volumes, but sounded quite good with effects. What surprised me most about this amp, was when my Dad plugged his '72 Gibson Les Paul Standard in. Perfect cleans, and an awesome, hot blues tone. This amp is much more versatile than one would imagine, if you experiment with your axe selection.
I had always read that these amps were brutal for metal but never got the chance to check one out. I have to say this amp is everything I always wanted. My B-52 had that standard "saturated" sound and I was always looking for something with some bite. This amp scores 100%. I?m playing it through the AT100 cab that I have and it sounds mean. I easily leave the other guitarists Peavey Valveking in the dust. Sounds great with my 7 strings. One thing that blows my mind is that I only have to set the gain at 5-6 and its more than heavy enough for the heaviest of metal music. Also at that gain setting and cranked up the amp is nice and quiet and I usually can just leave my noise gate off. It came stock with Ruby 6L6s which is great but the 12AX7s in mine were Sovtek which I?m not to keen on as they are usually cheap and unreliable. I would have rather had the JJs or Electro-Harmonix that also come stock. The amp does sound amazing even with the Sovteks though.
I got this amp for Christmas and it has only been amazing. I play it on 2 and it's about the same volume as my old 50 watt Fender I had. It took me a while to find my sound, though. I ended up buying a ts9 and I put it in front of my amp. It brightens my sound while adding more crunch. You can get that kill switch. The clean channel is good. Nothing special but effective. If you're thinking about buying this amp I would highly reccomend it.
Let me start out by saying I?ve played a good amount of guitar heads in my time. I've owned a Marshall DSL, and I?ve used just about every "high gain" head there is to try. No amp has pleased me as much as the 6505+. My friend owns a Mesa Triple and I would still take the 6505+ over it. It is a great head. But, this head isn't for the blues, jazz, rock and roll, or anything quiet and mellow. This is a loud nasty head. Great Clean channel, amazing lead channel. The presence and resonance allow sculpting the perfect tone to suite your heaviest needs.
