I've been looking for a mouthpiece like this for a long time. It's very versatile. Easy to play from PP to FF, Lower to Altissimo. It plays in tune, and the sound is fantastic!
It blends well with the sax section as well as other horns, and instruments, acoustic and electric alike and when it comes to your solo you can just play BEAUTIFULLY and loud. The range of sound colors you can produce is amazing!
Don't worry if you have to tune it at the middle of the neck cork (slightly out compared with bigger chamber mouthpieces). I observed this and Peter told me it's ok as far as the mouthpiece is well adjusted with the cork. I replaced my cork and it worked just fine.
I use it with Vandoren ZZ #3 for a darker more jazzy sound and Vandoren Classic # 2.5 reeds for brighter sound and ease of articulation
I've been playing sax for 43 years-all as an adult. I've played or trialed quite a list of mouthpiece brands over the years. I've always wanted to find a big/full, somewhat darkish , but very loud mouthpiece- kind of an early 50's R&B tone. Usually the very loud ones tend to have a thin or shrilly sound, and the big ,darker sounding ones have no volume. The Ponzol M2 Stainless 110 tenor piece has all three qualities I want. I've had this one since Dec. 2008.
It has a beautiful, rich tone and able to go from very loud to soft subtone at will, and when miked can easily "compete" with loud keys, bass, drums and guitars. Altissimo notes play easily. As loud as it can get ,it never gets shrill on the upper register. Most surprising is how dark and warm this piece can sound in the middle and lower register considering the high baffle- truly baffling! it can be used successfully in a jazz setting or a loud rock setting.
If I want to brighten it up a bit, I use a different lig, such as the BOIS ring ligature, which is the perfect size for the Ponzol and really frees up the vibration of the reed. The Rovner Lite lig which comes with it has a "taming effect" on the sound. More tonal variations also come with different brands and sizes of reeds. I prefer 2.5 Rico Royals or Vandoren ZZ's for cane and Fibracell 2.5 for synthetic.
The facings, tables and tips are as good as any refaced piece I've owned. It is therefore quite reed friendly. I initially balked at the relatively high price, but for me, it is well worth it to be able to obtain the tone , potential volume and ease of playing I like. I am quite content with this mouthpiece.
Sometimes I'll do a comparison test of a few of my favorite mouthpieces and I'll ask my bandmates or my WIFE which mouthpiece they prefer, They always pick the Ponzol- and my wife is quite particular!!
I've been playing the M2 110 for about a year and I am really satisfied with it. When I try another one of my other mouthpieces (Link 8, Dukoff 7) I am always a bit startled at the difference. The Ponzol has the edge of the Dukoff but with much wider tonal range. And the Link sounds so stuffy compared to the Ponzol. Honestly, I can't imagine playing anything but the Ponzol. The construction is flawless with nice even tip to accommodate every style reed. I've been playing Rico Royal 2.5 reeds with the stock Rovner lig and they sound just right. I just bought a new Yamaha 82Z (silver) and it sounds incredible with the Ponzol. Sigh......
