I love, love, love this stand. After years and years of using the basic, flimsy, ugly standard wire stands, this stand is the stand to replace all of those. The construction is solid, it extends higher than any simple wire stand, looks great, and if you play outdoors at all, you can use magnets to hold your music instead of clips that never hold or just tear music! For the price of two or three wire stands (which any high performing musician will go through) the value of this stand is worth it!
This is a decent stand for what it is, but I think it is too cheaply made for the price. I've gone through three of these stands in the last six years - the head of the stand folds in half (for easy storage), but the knobs to tighten and loosen it get off track easily, so there went stand number one. On stand number two, the bit that is used to tighten the stand to keep it in place when adjusting the height literally just snapped in half. I'm on stand number three right now - it was built with the tolerances too tight, so putting it together and getting it apart is a real pain. That being said, I haven't found any other portable stands on the market that are better. If you have room, just buy a real non-folding stand. Otherwise, this is way better than the wire stand you're used to from middle school, and until something else comes out, it's not bad.
I bought two of these and didn't mind the plasticky feel at first. Pretty soon bits of both began to break, despite only light, infrequent use. The round grip that sets the height split on both and we used gaffa tape for a while but then the legs' mounting section began to fall out of the central tube. Sometimes a leg would fall off if you lifted it to move it. We've now consigned them both to the bin and I'm looking for two new portable but sturdy stands.
The only good thing about this stand is that it folds well and doesn't take up much room once it is folded away. Less room in the landfills. I used this stand last night at a gig and it kept falling while I was playing (music was light) and the leg kept coming off. I really would like to get my money back for this stand because it is a piece of junk.
It was so bad that the other people in the orchestra were getting frustrated with my stand as well.
I appreciated the aluminum extension when I took the stand on a tour in Europe. It was excellent for getting the necessary height for the percussion row. This stand holds most of the heavy music very well, but the available "junk" tray will not fit on it. In addition, we bought it some time ago and have found that the plastic parts can be broken easily, especially around the legs. Finally, temperature often causes various parts to "jam," so taking these apart can be nearly impossible after a vigorous rehearsal. Keep improving it. Thanks.
