Petersen Folding Music StandThe folding Peterson Design sheet music stand is made from black, injection-molded ABS plastic. It's a great idea, but the quality is poor. The locking mechanism for the desk hinge jams up, so you either can't tighten it, or the desk can't be folded or unfolded. But the biggest problem is with the legs. The tops of the legs have a wedge that fits into slots on the center tube. There's no positive locking of the legs into the stand, so the legs fall out very easily when you move the stand, or just lightly bump it. As a result of falls, I've had the wedge on one leg break off. Petersen sent a replacement leg, but the problem remains.
A music stand that so readily falls apart is not acceptable in a performance environment.
The only reason I didn't give this 5 stars is that it took me a while to get comfortable assembling the stand, quickly. As for sturdiness, it is absolutely the best that I've found, with the exception of the Manhasset. It is heavier than the little chrome things, but they're so flimsy that it's almost pointless to use.
This is a solid stand without those annoying little clamps on the shelf that tears up music, not helping at all. It's also nice enough that it can be used in public performances without embarassment. It is sturdy and has lasted me for 3 years, so far with no difficulty at all. As a matter of fact, I'm about to order another one because one of my advanced students is so in love with it (after I loaned to to her) that she wants to buy it from me! Really fantastic product. I'd give it 5 stars if they could make it just a little quicker to assemble at first glance (although it really is a snap once you've done it a few times).
This stand was a piece of junk, it's made of cheap plastic, is bulky / not very portable in its folded form anyway, and mine got stuck in a half-open position and would not budge. I returned it to WWBW less than a month after buying it and now I have a "port-a-stand" http://www.portastand.com/ my wife gave me as a gift that I am 100% pleased with. I love WWBW, but don't buy this product, it's worthless.
I bought two of these and didn't mind the plasticky feel at first. Pretty soon bits of both began to break, despite only light, infrequent use. The round grip that sets the height split on both and we used gaffa tape for a while but then the legs' mounting section began to fall out of the central tube. Sometimes a leg would fall off if you lifted it to move it. We've now consigned them both to the bin and I'm looking for two new portable but sturdy stands.
If you expect this stand to be as stable as a standard studio stand, but as portable as a wire stand, this is not for you. If you expect to be able to run over it with your truck and remain undamaged, forget it. If you expect to play outside in a gale and not have it blow over, this stand is not for you. Simply, it does what it does well: compromises between weight, portability, stability, durability, and usability.
I use this stand frequently indoors and outdoors, and it's especially nice for the times when I have to have an extra stand at home for guests. I especially like the retractable "wings" that let you spread out music sheets.
As for assembly, I don't know why anyone should have a problem with this. It's almost intuitive. Disassembly, the same. And to make it easy to pack it all away, just put a piece of tape on each leg and the base so that, when the parts are in proper position, the strips on the pieces are aligned.
As I wrote, it does what it does well.
