A high-pitched and lyrical instrument, piccolos are pitched in C like their relative the flute but play at an octave higher.  As a result, the piccolo often doubles the flute or the violin offering its sweet, high voice to add nuance to the orchestra.

Much of the early music which the piccolo now plays was probably originally written for the sopranino.  For example, George Frideric Handel’s “Rinaldo” features the piccolo as does Johann Sebastian Bach’s “Cantata.”  Among the most famous music written for this instrument are the three “Concerti” by Antonio Vivaldi.  The piccolo saw its greatest rise in popularity around the turn of the 20th century.  The majority of the music from this time was written for the D-flat piccolo which is no longer made.  One of the most memorable piccolo pieces from this era is John Philip Sousa’s “Stars and Stripes Forever.”  In the last 30 to 40 years, the piccolo has seen a resurgence in popularity due to such composers as Dmitri Shostakovich and Igor Stravinsky.

The Woodwind and Brasswind provides a wide assortment of piccolos for all levels of players.  Among its popular brands are Gemeinhardt, Pearl, Yamaha, and Jupiter.  Piccolos are made from plastic, brass, resin, grenadilla, nickel silver, silver, and gold.  Depending on your skill level and musical needs, you can browse The Woodwind and Brasswind to find the piccolo best equipped for you.

A highly respected flute and piccolo manufacturer, Gemeinhardt produces some of the finest piccolos available.  They create exquisite professional piccolos along with models better suited to students and conservatory players.  This company can trace their craftsmanship back to the revolutionary flute designer, Theobald Boehm.  Arthur Gemeinhardt trained with Emil Rittershausen who had studied under Boehm himself.  This tradition of excellence is emphasized by the Gemeinhardt signature engraved on each and every instrument.  For their materials, they create their student flutes from a nickel alloy, their conservatory flutes are silver-plated, and their professional instruments are formed from solid gold and solid silver.  Among the popular Gemeinhardt piccolos sold through Woodwind and Brasswind are the solid silver Gemeinhardt 4SS Professional Piccolo and the silver-plated Gemeinhardt Model 4SH Piccolo.  The Gemeinhardt Roy Seaman Signature Piccolo has a grenadilla body with a special scale design and is ideal for acoustic piccolo performances.

Another time-honored brand is Yamaha.  Known for their wide array of quality products in a variety of mediums, Yamaha provides consistently excellent flutes and piccolos.  From Woodwind and Brasswind choose from among the Yamaha YPC-32 Piccolo, a concert or marching band instrument made from ABS resin.  For the professional musician, consider the Yamaha YPC-82 Professional Piccolo which features a handcrafted grenadilla body with a sterling silver headjoint.  If you are in the market for your first piccolo or are still a student, consider one of Jupiter’s instruments like the Jupiter 305S Piccolo.

Regardless of your skill level and preferences, The Woodwind and Brasswind offers a wide variety of piccolos for the student or professional.  Whether playing in a professional orchestra or a school band, find the perfect instrument at The Woodwind and Brasswind.
