I was excited to finally get a bass string winder. Then this thing came. The winder is attached to the bass by a single screw, and when you attempt to wind the string on, the thing tightens up and is impossible to rotate. You end up turning it just as you would by hand, which is not what a winder should do. It should use a ratcheting system of some sort. In any case, I was really disappointed.
A string winder is not used to fine tune your guitar, it is to help get the string on faster. When it starts to tighten the you stop and use your hand to fine tune. If it had more then 1 pivot point what use would it be. Even I know this as a beginner and a Hobbyist. Glad I dont live in CA if this is how the music teachers are there.
I did not buy this from WWBW, but I have wanted to write a review.
The cutter on this is crap. The first time I used it cutting a Warwick Black Label B string end, it dinged the (presumably non-hardened) cutter blades.
This thing doesn't even wind that well either. I have two or three other guitar and bass string winders - including one that was found in the dirt driveway after spending a year or two out there - all of those will spin freely if you just hold the handle and flick your wrist. I am talking about spinning like one of those old party noisemakers, not winding up strings with it.
In actual use, this thing is terrible because it does not spin easily or freely. It just sort of binds and grabs. I even loosened the screw in the pivot point a bit and that just makes that joint sloppy and still doesn't spin nicely. Another bass string winder I got for like $2.99 out of the fishbowl next to the register at my local store 10+ years ago winds string much smoother and easier. I only bought this one because the integrated cutter seemed like a good idea. Nice concept; poor execution.
