If you can only afford one mouthpiece, this is the one to buy. I bought it on the recommendation of three of my friends who have used one for a while. I am impressed with how well it is made, it's good intonation and it's sound quality. It can be pushed hard so you will be noticed. It also gives me a good range of notes as I can hit "G" above the staff and probably higher with my Leblanc 7168 bass clarinet. It seems to work well for me with any 2 1/2 to 3 reed and a Rovner ligature.
I am a long-time tenor player. On tenor, I use an Otto Link 7* mouthpiece, #3 reeds, and an old Winslow ligature. I like a big sound. I am new to the bass clarinet, as of 5 months ago. I tried several mouthpieces before choosing this one: the Pomarico Jazz**, the Van Doren B46, and the unnamed one that came with my second hand old Bundy bass. The Portnoy works great for me. I am using a #3 Legere Studio Cut plastic tenor sax reed, and a ligature I made to emulate the Winslow. Big sound. Responds through the whole horn. And... it's cheaper than the others!
