Portnoy Bb Clarinet MouthpieceLong considered a standard for American clarinetists, the Portnoy Bb clarinet mouthpiece produce a wonderfully focused tone and yet is very free blowing. Great for the symphony or chamber hall, the Portnoy clarinet mouthpiece has been the most recommended step-up mouthpiece since its release.Style distinctions between BP01, BP02, and BP03 versionsThe facing affects the length of the opening, width and slope of the opening. The most important factor is the tip opening regarding how it relates to the bite of the player and how easily it is played for best tonal reproduction. The BP02 is the original model that made B Portnoy famous. The BP02 has a good tone and provides easy blowing, and has been used in bands and orchestras by professionals for years. If the player has been playing clarinet for a while and wants the best, then the BP02 is probably the better choice. It's the most popular. The BP01 has a more closed opening and may work better for a smaller bite or beginner clarinetist. The BP03 is more open and better for doublers.

I have used an old BP-2 for jazz playing on and off for many years, and find that it compares strongly against much more pricey mouthpieces. I was introduced to the Portnoy line after hearing a player with a remarkable tone who was playing a BP-1. He let me try his mouthpiece, and though it was too closed a facing for me, the warmth, and fullness of tone was what I was searching for. There's a good reason that these mouthpieces have been around as long as they have. They work well, with a warm tone.
The BP01 is the best mouthpiece I have yet played on and it has never let me down in any regard. It has excellent control and produces a great tone.
The B. Portnoy mouthpieces are exactly what they claim to be -- wonderful mouthpieces that have great control and great tone.
