Creating an Ideal Practice Space

If you're serious about learning a new instrument, then an appropriate practice space is an absolute must. But what makes for the perfect practice space? Definitely having a big enough area and all the equipment you'll need to play. But it's more than that, as there are often details that can be overlooked that are definitely essential.

While it's unlikely you'll be able to create the perfect space, there are things you should look out for in order to maximize your space. Things like power outlets, temperature control and soundproofing (for you and your neighbors!) are all things that may not be top of mind, but they definitely make a huge differencein terms of comfort and efficiency for your practices. There is no one-space-fits-all though, so prioritize your needs by how much you value those details and work to get as many as possible.

You'll also want to make sure you have all the right equipment. Having a tuner, music stands, instrument maintenance accessories, notebooks and pencils, a metronome, and a recording device to mark your progress, will all enhance what you're capable of, allowing you to focus on different aspects of your play and analyze them later. Don’t forget comfortable seating too! If you're going to be practicing a lot, this is something that should be at the top of every list.

The ultimate goal is to set up a practice area and leave it set up. Having it always ready will encourage you to practice more and will give you more time to play. This isn't always possible though, so do yourself a huge favor and organize your equipment in containers for easy access. And because you'll have everything you need in your "portable practice kit" you can even take your practices on the road if you want to jam with other musicians.

On top of that, there are a few other considerations you should keep in mind:

  • If you don't have control over the temperature of your space, make sure you have access to windows.
  • Purchase a power strip or two if you need more electrical outlets.
  • For ease of use, consider Manhasset stands when selecting a music stand.
  • If you find yourself getting distracted easily, try turning off your cellphone or consider wearing headphones while practicing.
  • Is soundproofing an issue? Check out the variety of mutes and silent strings available at Woodwind & Brasswind (everyone around will thank you).
  • Make sure to keep your practice space clean. It will help encourage more practice and make it less of a 'hang out'.
  • Reduce eyestrain by making sure you have sufficient lighting for practice day or night. Being able to read your music is a must.
  • You've built a space for practicing, so make sure it's designed to allow you to make the most of your practices!
