Comments about Protec Pro Pac English Horn/Oboe Combo Case:

I've used this as my primary English Horn case for a year. It thoroughly protects my instrument and has plenty of room for reeds, tools, tuner, etc. The outside material is tough and has withstood being pulled over rough surfaces that would tear other cases. The zipper closure keeps the case firmly shut no matter the circumstances and the Velcro flap and double handle adds an extra level of security. The case feels comfortable to me with the shoulder strap and rides securely on my body. I don't have the concern of others about the left hand EH keys being too close to the oboe bell. I feel confident that when the case is shut, there isn't enough movement to cause problems.

I only have a couple of gripes: the bocal loops are a bit finicky. The elastic does seem to conform over time, but I feel reinforced cloth loops would also do well. By far my biggest complaint is the size of the accessory pouch as it is too small to contain a full-sized 14" x 12.5" concert folder. I can put the folder in the pouch, but leaves me unable to zip it up. I'm looking into having a separate pouch sewn on to the back of the case just to hold folders like this.

Otherwise, this is a fantastic product. It holds my instruments securely and has room for most accessories. It is also by far the most affordable double case on the market. Though it has some flaws, I don't feel these would be eliminated by the cases in such a higher price bracket. In short: this is the Oboe/EH double case for you!

      Good Double Case

Comments about Protec Pro Pac English Horn/Oboe Combo Case:

Holds instruments securely, although slot for lower EH joint is a bit tight, and very close to oboe bell. (I have to carry padding between the bell and LH B key). Easy to carry with backpack straps. Outer pouch is large enough for tools and music. When pouch is loaded, the weight tends to close case at awkward times. Case could use a screwdriver loop in the interior, for ready access. Insulation is good.

Comments about Protec Pro Pac English Horn/Oboe Combo Case:

The outside of the case seems pretty durable. The English horn B key is a little too close to the oboe bell. It makes me wonder if the case gets jostled a bit if the low B key might bend or scratch the oboe bell. If there were more room for the thumb rest of the bottom joint of the English horn that might solve the problem.

In general, I like this case better than the BAM backpack combo case that I used to have. There is more room in the ProPac for swabs, humidifier, 3-reed case, and a screwdriver. The outside pocket is fantastic. I can not only put my neck strap in it, there's room for my reed making tools and a little music.

Good budget case and overall good

Comments about Protec Pro Pac English Horn/Oboe Combo Case:

I got this case with the Protec Backpack Strap and makes a very great combo for about $150. The first thing I noticed is that the case is bigger than I thought it would be. It's about the size of my torso and also very thick. I moved my instruments from my old case to the new case, and it's not very intuitive to put in. The moldings are weirdly shaped and not very distinct. I'm not sure if I'll get used to this layout. Also note that in the official product picture, the lower joint of the English horn is reversed in the actual case. I emailed Protec to confirm. The bocal holder are very tiny. It took me about 5 minutes to get my 2 bocals into the case. They are elastic so maybe they will stretch with time. I tried to close the case and I noticed it woudn't close all the way by itself. The left hand cluster (left F, Eb, low B keys) of the english horn was blocking the case from closing all the way. If I forced the case down, it pushes a bit further into the case padding and does close. Protec emails assured me that the soft padding will not damage the keywork. It comes with a tag to put your contact information in. It hooks onto the case like a very thin leather belt which looks like it will probably tear in a few weeks. With the included shoulder strap, it's not just that feasible to carry around. This thing is huge and putting on your shoulder is very awkward. With the backpack strap, it's a lot better and more manageable. The strap itself is nice too. I also would not suggest carrying this with your hand - it's simply too awkward and heavy. It is best with the backpack strap. However, the case does shift left and right when you're walking because the loop where the strap attaches is too big. A minor thing but a little annoying. The big pocket for accessories is very generous. Includes 2 zipped pockets (1 mesh), and 3 pen holders. Plenty of room to put reeds, reed making supplies, tuners, metronomes, music, stands, anything. The versatility of the pocket is so great and makes me forget about the bulk of the case. I can fit my B foot flute in the case too. Overall, great case. 5 stars for the price. The outside material looks very nice and well built. I haven't owned it long enough yet to determine its long term reliability but Protec does have a 5 year warranty for it. If this case was $300, I would probably give it a 3 star. And if you do have $300 to spend for a double case, I would suggest going for the Bam Trekking Case. My friend has one and it is much nicer than the Protec. The mold is a lot better and deeper, and the top of the case is also molded to make room for the instrument. The layout also makes a lot more sense as all the joints face left. You just drop the bocals into the slots instead of trying to thread it through a tiny elastic band on the Protec.

Great, sturdy case for a great price!

Comments about Protec Pro Pac English Horn/Oboe Combo Case:

This case has kept my oboe and English horn safe though much traveling. It is sturdy and rugged. It's the lowest-priced double case I have found, and it is good quality. My only reservation is that it is bulkier than other double cases. It's not your slim-line French-style double case, but it's a fraction of the price.
