I bought this bag for my son to carry a Cannonball Big Bell Stone series alto sax. This bell on this sax has a slightly larger diameter than standard alto saxophones and while some saxophone cases cannot accommodate this larger bell, the Protec PB-304 will hold it just fine. The case is well made and it holds the saxophone firmly in place. Inside the case is a nice enclosed compartment, which is subdivided into two sections, which holds the neck, mouthpiece, extra reeds and a cleaning cloth. There is a large zippered pocket on the outside of the bag measuring 9" x 22" which easily holds a full size music book. There are additional storage areas in this outside pocket for pencils and miscellaneous items. This outside pocket would also probable hold a small fold-up music stand. The included shoulder strap is nicely padded and wide.
This is a good case. I don't think it is as sturdy as the original Selmer case my horn came with, but a good case none the less. The hardware for the shoulder strap is of good quality. The side storage pouch carries a two part sax stand and music with plenty of room to spare. My Mark VII fits nicely into it. Inside storage is a little sparse and I wish my horn would fit a little more snug. Those are the only two reasons which gets this case 4 stars instead of 5.
I've used Protec cases for years. I've been very fortunate. I've never dropped my case or had it abused. Wore one out to the point the cover was threadbare. BUT - the other night I placed my case with my horn inside as I always do on an elevated surface. I turned to put my jacket up and heard a serious clunk. The chair I placed my case on had fallen to the floor, along with my case of course. About a 3 foot fall. Not even a solid drop. Just teetered over. I opened the case and did a quick look at the stack and worked the keys. Everything seemed fine. I couldn't play worth a darn that night. Blamed it on the reeds. Then my buddy says - "What happened to your horn?" Here's what I found - Bell is totally bent into an ovoid shape and the rim is pulled down like a pouty lip. Nothing below low C# will seat. Looks like the bell is torqued/twisted. And that's just the easily visible damage. The horn is totally unplayable. No more a Protec fan. I would recommend staying totally away from this case if you're looking for instrument protection.
As I bought more and more accessories for my alto, I came to the conclusion I should invest in a better quality case with a bit more space. It was a great case especially from the outside. Everything about this case I found very impressive except one thing, the main inside compartment is split in two section by and un-removable divider, this limits the space of the inside to a neck, a neckstrap, and you can squeeze in a mouthpiece. There is also a compartment which you could fit an additional mouthpiece, which I have used myself. notes- -outisde pocket DOES fit a band-sized folder -outside pocket inside has additional small pockets for organization -I can fit a small cleaning kit, a box of reads, cork grease, TWO band folders, and TWO march books inside the outside pocket, very spacious. Very worth the money if your are interested.
I recently purchased this case to replace the case that came with my Yamaha YAS-23 because I wanted more space. I got more space and more. In the main compartment, you have enough room for the saxophone body and a mouthpiece. In a closed off compartment you have enough room for a neck and a second mouthpiece or whatever you want (I personally put my neck-strap and neck in there). Then in the side pouch I have two boxes of reeds, a reed holder, two tuners, a neck scrubber, and a pencil. Even after that I have a ton of room left. I can even fit a 3 ring binder in the side pouch if I need to. In short, if you are looking for a new case that offers a lot of protection and storage room, then this is the case for you.
This case will not stand up to the abuse of a beginning band student. The handles never stay together and are very uncomfortable. Will be looking for a wooden or ABS case for a replacement.
I just purchased a Guardala NY alto. It fits this horn nearly perfectly. Lots of space in the outer pocket. Nice, sturdy shoulder strap - convertible to backpack style with the correct straps (additional purchase). Room inside for instrument, two necks (or single neck and a few boxes of reeds/reed cases) and single mouthpiece w/lig and cap. Similar protection as some other cases costing 2-3x as much! An excellent value for the price!!!
I bought this case about 3 years ago, and has held up well. I like the side pouch for music. This newer version though is heavier than my older Protec, which I don't like. They say it's lightweight, but I don't agree.
