Rico and Royal by D’Addario
Rico by D’Addario and Royal by D’Addario are among the most popular reeds in the world. Their design and manufacture have changed little in the decades they have been available. Most reed players, professional or amateur, started their journey alongside an orange box of Ricos.
Rico by D’Addario and Royal by D’Addario reeds differ in a few ways. Rico by D'Addario are unfiled reeds whose profile and blank are fairly thin. They are flexible and easy to play, and are economically priced. Band directors across the world have come to rely on Rico reeds for their economy, quality, reliability and consistency.
Royal by D'Addario also have a thin profile and blank, but they are filed. The filed reeds avoid the presence of bits of cane bark, which can present subtle unexpected attributes in sound and feel. They offer a similar response to the Ricos, but with an increased clarity preferred by classical musicians. Rico by D’Addario supports the entire clarinet and saxophone families; they even offer reeds for bass sax and contrabass clarinet. Royal by D’Addario is offered in the more common instruments.
Plasticover Reeds
Rico’s Plasticover reeds are Rico’s entry into the synthetic reed market. They are ideal for many applications, including military bands that deal with changing weather. Touring artists who encounter the same thing also appreciate their consistency. School band programs, especially marching bands, benefit from their unchanging nature as well. Plasticover reeds feature a plastic coating that increases their durability. It also makes them less susceptible to temperature and humidity changes. They are bright and present, with excellent projection. These great-sounding, long-lasting and durable reeds are made for soprano, alto, tenor and baritone saxophones, along with Bb clarinet.
Grand Concert Select Reeds
The Grand Concert Select Reeds are filed, and feature a traditional tip and thick spine for clarity and response. A thick blank lends them a pronounced body in the attack. The Grand Concert Select reeds are made from cane that is located farthest away from the cane bark. This results in a warmer, mellower tone. They are well-suited for ensemble playing and are a favorite among classical musicians.
