These reeds have a projection and brightness to their sound that I wasn't getting with straight up cane. At first, they feel terrible, and you think, "That?s what I get for buying Rico." But after an hour, the reed will "break in" (it seems like you don't need to do anything special for this... just play on it for an hour) and sound as good as it will get. They feel good, like a cane reed, but they also respond and play immediately (after the first few uses) like a plastic reed. Try these reeds: if they're not a good match with your mouthpiece or you find them uncomfortable, at least you tried something that has the potential to produce good results. My setup: Beechler 6 med. chamber, Plasticover 3.5.
These reeds played the moment I first used them. You don't need to break these reeds in or wet them before use. They have great tone and great projection.
I've tried many different kinds of reeds. No one like Rico plasticover. Excellent response, very clear sound. Just the best.
While I have tried out most brands of reed in 40 years of playing over a dozen different horns in all 4 ranges I always seemed to wind up with Rico french cuts. I would say that I found 80 to 90% of this brand playable and over 50 % really good in terms of playability factors-volume, tone and projection and durability-how long would they perform consistantly. So I was a little skeptical when a fellow horn player told me he now only used plasticovers. I was suprised because I had always appreciated this guys tonal range especially the sweet and mellow part which I had always been disatisfied with when I'd used plastic or plastic coated reeds in the past. Because it had been a long time I decided to buy a box and now I'm a convert too. So far the consistancy of performance of the reeds in a box has been 100% and with hundreds of hours playing time I'm still on my first box. Oh and did I mention there's almost no break in or warm/soakup time.
These reeds blew me away the first time I played them. They are not your typical straight-up jazz reed though. I decided to try them out when I found that one of my favorite sax players, Dave Koz plays on them. They really helped bring out that pop sound I had been looking for. I also play in pit orchestras and the reed is very reliable when I'm making quick horns switches. I play on a Beechler and it seems that these reeds work very well on the metal mouthpieces. The reeds are usually consistent and they last for a very long time. The last one I played on lasted me almost 6 months and was still very strong! You should definitely try out these reeds.
