I bought a box of these to try with my new meyer hard rubber 7 medium mouthpiece. it was pretty cool but the tone wasn't very good. it sounded pretty nice in the range of the g above the staff and above, but it was very buzzy in the lower-middle rage. i may have just gotten the wrong stiffness. i got a 3. i mentioned the reeds to my teacher after i bought them and he told me they were bad with our kind of florida weather and humidity but they were nice in the north. just not for me.
I have played plasticovers for a few months - off and on. So, if you're looking to purchase for the first time here are some traits of the reed not already said. First, the sound they produce is a very tight one. I find it is slightly too generic in that it is a very pin-pointed, machine - like sound (however a lot of people go for that tight sound and I?m not trying to offend). Another characteristic that I did find nice was that it had a bright buzz that came through. The reed itself still plays like cane and has maximum control in all registers. After playing every Rico brand reed on sax, I can say this style of Rico has the best control, both compared to other Rico products and other reeds. It?s a nice warm reed that I recommend everyone at least try. There are many people who swear by this reed due to its control, ease of emission (it is a free blowing reed that, once worn in becomes even more free blowing), and its durability, as one reed could end up lasting you a number of weeks (probably why they are sold in 5's). I now play Vandoren Javas just because I like more of a full-cane sound, but when I do not have time in between playing/gigs to soak a reed, Plasticovers are a great, close second!
These reeds are the perfect compliment for a metal mouthpiece as I have experimented with them. They provide an extra free-blowing feat that is an effortless sound. These reeds are very durable and work excellent altissimo.
It's great to use and lasts a really long time without getting chipped or broken.
I have tried almost every reed of almost every maker from rico to vandoren. I went from rico jazz selects, rico royals, vandoren java reds, vandoren zz, v16,and finally I went back to these. If there's one thing I love about these reeds it's that every reed works every single time. I now use these reeds on my soprano, alto, and tenor saxophone and I am loving them! It's also a very easy reed to play and it feels nice to finally have a reed that can give me the same great sound everytime.
