I used these reeds for marching and pep band. They had decent performance; however, the plastic coating gradually chipped off over the school year. It chipped off where I held my embrochure and at the place where the reeds met the mouthpiece. These reeds are NOT something you would want to use for concert band; their tone is not concert quality. However, they work well for marching band.
I admit I was just curious so I bought 2.5s for tenor based on other reviews. I tried them on my Yamaha 5C and Rico Graphonite B7 - very buzzy on both. This may be what your looking for, but it's not for me. One thing I have to say, every one I tried was consistent in character...bzzz. There's probably a place for them (I remember some cold winter nights in marching band...), but can't see them for daily use.
I love these reeds. You get five reeds per box and at least five are ready to play right out of the box. I like to use them with my Dukoff hard rubber mouthpiece. The reed allows me to compete with loud guitar players very nicely. I get a nice clear tone throughout the whole range of the horn. When the reed finally and gradually loses the coating, they still remain very playable but no longer have that "edgy" sound that I like. With the edge gone, is when they are perfect for jazz or big band playing.
I have been playing saxophone for 15-years and have tried all kinds of reeds throughout the years. These are excellent reeds, very versatile. I use these reeds on my Otto Link Super Tone Master 8 with Gospel Jazz and Contemporary Jazz, and on my Otto Link Super Tone Master NY 8 with Big band and Soft Ballads. Many people say you can't use them for a Paul Desmond or Stan Gets tone But I can get any tone I want out of these reeds just by adjusting my embouchure. I highly recommend these reeds for anyone looking for a very versatile reed that will do anything you want. Consistency is a little quirky at times so just be careful when you buy these and get a couple of boxes just to be safe.
I bought these reeds because of previous reviews that I had read. I was immediately impressed with the sound of these reeds when playing rock, or with other musicians who have personal amplification. The sound is bright enough that it cuts the other instruments very well when soloing, but can still be subtile when I need them to. I found the reeds required some getting used to, as I think they respond differently than the regular cane Rico Jazz Selects that I usually use, but because of the sound projection, and the fact that they respond quite quickly when I'm doubling, and don't have the ability to keep the reeds soaked, I decided to buy a set for my alto as well.
