Don't get me wrong: I love the idea of the reed vitalizer, but if Rico wants to make a bag weaker than your average ziploc, then there's going to be a problem. When I first opened up the bag and broke the seal, the white plastic closure snapped in two. I duct taped the two halves together and successfully used the bag for a few days. But after the third day, a large slit had already formed near the top of the bag. I was angry. I then got a ziploc bag with a slide closure and reinforced it with heavy duty duct tape. I put all my reeds in and have been using it happily ever since. The vitalizer packs work wonders for reed consistency and stability!
So in short: just buy the individual humidity packs and reinforce a ziploc bag with duct tape. It was a great idea, but very poorly executed by Rico.
Using the 73% model for about 6 weeks and it is a time saver. I play every day and the reeds are almost ready to be used and only require little wetting. I've had no problems with mold!
I recommend this product!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It will save you time. Oh yea, the clear package makes it easy to find the particular reed you want to use.
I used this over the winter, and I really think it helps stabilize my reeds. I used the two higher humidity levels, and both worked for me with no mold problems. I experimented using the packets in other containers as well. The packets will break down if you put them in regular freezer bags. Works ok in the newer Vandoren reed case, but not as well as in the Reedvitalizer bag.
Unfortunately, I managed to rip open my Reedvitalizer bag, so I am having to buy a new one. I wish the bags were sturdier and came in different sizes.
Georgia summers can have brutal humidity, but the Rico reed vitalizer kit saved me the cost of constantly buying new reeds as my old reeds died or the need to purchase sea-salt, bags, tuperware and all the rest of the old-fashion solution. This product does a great job of keeping your reeds in prime playing condition long after their open-air counterparts have died.
I must, however, end with the cautionary note that for those who have tight spaces in their small cases, you'll end up buying a new kit every couple of seasons. Sadly, the ziplock-esque bag they give you is easy to tear holes into, and if you fold and shove it into your case enough times something will find that weak-spot and tear your baggy a new one.
The concept holds true and the product works. Just be careful.
I've been using this thing for about 3 weeks now, with 73%, and so far it's working really well. I was at my wit's end for a while trying to figure out how to keep my reeds from warping so much....it's quite a relief to finally find something that works. I don't have to soak them as much when I first take them out, and the warping on the back is very slight compared to what it used to be. Not sure how well the bag is going to hold up--I'm thinking about taping around the seams with packing tape or duct tape to reinforce them some. Anyway, I'd definitely recommend this product.
