Rico Royal Graftonite Alto Saxophone MouthpieceAn absolutely amazing jazz piece for the price. The Rico Royal Graftonite pieces offer great projection and an even sound at a most affordable price.Tone Chamber Style (A, B, or C): The tone chamber of a mouthpiece is the inside area of the mouthpiece. The size and shape of the tone chamber will change the tone quality of the instrument. With the Rico Royal mouthpieces, an "A" tone chamber will give a dark sound which is best suited for concert work, a "B" tone chamber will give a little more brilliance (better for using with most bands), and a "C" tone chamber will give a lot more brilliance and edge which is great for rock and jazz bands.FACINGSFacing (3, 5, or 7): The facing is determined by the distance from the tip of the reed to where it first touches the mouthpiece. The bigger the facing number, the farther back the reed goes before actually touching the mouthpiece. Changing the facing of the mouthpiece will generally change the volume of the instrument. With a shorter facing (3), less of the reed is vibrating, so the instrument will tend to be quieter, with a longer facing (7), more of the reed is vibrating, so the instrument will tend to be louder.

This is a great piece. I normally used an otto link rubber on my Conn chu berry alto. With the older ones, there was a 9 facing and I could wail on it. On a good reed I could get up a major fifth higher. I even took a huge step and bought one for the orchestra I'm in. The sound is sweet and smooth. Great classical piece. Definitely recommend.
I really do love because it has a smooth and a bright sound. I purchased a C7 for my Alto and it is very good for the price. I really like the sound.
I perfer this mp to the C* that selmer makes. This mp produces a nice bottom, in the B5 model. It is great with blues and jazz styles.
I obtained a handful of both the Graftonite, and the "Metallite" pieces, for Alto, Tenor, & Soprano saxes, while visiting a friend who worked at Rico, back in '92 or so. They were given me by the man who designed them, Arnold Brilhart! Yes, the famous mouthpiece maker from way back! Why Rico kept this fact a big secret (perhaps one reason these mouthpieces have forever been "under the radar") I'll never in a million years understand.
However, I'm a pro player, yet I have used these on all my horns at one time or another, usually alternating with metal Bergs, or whatever else I have used. But they work, and they beat many others that sell for five or ten times as much! The five stars is in consideration of it's near-nothing cost...
Boy am I surprised at how well this mouthpiece projects and the bright jazzy sound I can get. Ive ordered and tried other mouthpieces costing 6 to 10 times as much and none of those mouthpieces sounded anywhere as good. I use a fibracell 2 1/2 stregth reed with the rico graftonite alto C7 and boy, its a winning combination. I admit I was very skeptical at first because of the $16 price tag and thought that it was probably not even bothering with but it plays better than mouthpieces Ive tried with a MSRP between $100.00 to over $200.00. I play on a Stephanhouser student alto sax and really had trouble getting good projection of the altissimo range of the instrument. However with this rico piece I can play all the way up to high F# and much louder with the Fibracell reed than I could with cane on other more expensive pieces. Im on a budget and am absolutely amazed of what kind of quality you can get for so little money. This piece is a must for ever sax player from beginner to pro. Two thumbs up!
