Rico Royal Graftonite Tenor Saxophone MouthpieceRICO ROYAL GRAFONITETONE CHAMBERSTone Chamber Style (A, B, or C): The tone chamber of a mouthpiece is the inside area of the mouthpiece. The size and shape of the tone chamber will change the tone quality of the instrument. With the Rico Royal mouthpieces, an "A" tone chamber will give a dark sound which is best suited for concert work, a "B" tone chamber will give a little more brilliance (better for using with most bands), and a "C" tone chamber will give a lot more brilliance and edge which is great for rock and jazz bands.FACINGSFacing (3, 5, or 7): The facing is determined by the distance from the tip of the reed to where it first touches the mouthpiece. The bigger the facing number, the farther back the reed goes before actually touching the mouthpiece. Changing the facing of the mouthpiece will generally change the volume of the instrument. With a shorter facing (3), less of the reed is vibrating, so the instrument will tend to be quieter, with a longer facing (7), more of the reed is vibrating, so the instrument will tend to be louder.

These have been around for years, and I finally tried one. What a surprise! I thought of these as "gimme" mouthpieces - the ones that come with the saxophone, but nobody really uses. I finally tried one, and was blown away. While not the most exciting or complex tone, these are still great mouthpieces. Very stable, very consistent, and excellent intonation. I have quite a collection of mouthpieces, and this one holds its own with my Selmer and Otto Link. Now, if Rico would only bring back the Metalite...
I bought this mouthpiece for the price, but it is an amazing piece. It is free blowing and has an awesome tone. I play the B7 with Rico royal 3 and a half reeds.
I've been using this mpc for 2 years now with great results. Its now my main mpc for my Buescher TT beating out my old OttoLink STM. I find that I can get great tone and LOUDNESS without too much effort. In my performances (mostly Blues) this is a plus. Recommend it highly.
The value of this piece is unbeatable! It is not hard at all to get the volume and projection out of this mouthpiece to rival many metal "high dollar" mouthpieces. I use this both in combo work and in a big band setting. It's great for solo work! I have no trouble producing a nice bright sound that resonates in all ranges and all volumes. Altissimo is no problem at all with this mouthpiece. You won't regret giving this piece a try. I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 because it does take a little getting used to out of the box. It will take a little practice time to really be able to control this mouthpiece, especially while playing at low volumes. This is not a student mouthpiece.
I recently started playing the sax again after 20 years (I got a cheap chinese copy tenor for $307 all included) and replaced the mouthpiece with a Yamaha 5C* (about 0.082" tip opening) which improved the tone 100%, but recently got a Grafonite B7 (I think about 0.102" tip opening), and wow, what a difference - takes some chops and a couple of weeks long tones but can get a rich full tone out of a pretty crappy instrument; plus with this much play, it helps to get some of the out of tune notes near pitch. At less than twenty bucks, you can get a pro sound - if only I had a pro musician to go with it. The wide opening on the -7 series makes this a loud mouthpiece - tell your family and neighbors to beware if you go for the -7.
