Rico Royal Graftonite Tenor Saxophone MouthpieceRICO ROYAL GRAFONITETONE CHAMBERSTone Chamber Style (A, B, or C): The tone chamber of a mouthpiece is the inside area of the mouthpiece. The size and shape of the tone chamber will change the tone quality of the instrument. With the Rico Royal mouthpieces, an "A" tone chamber will give a dark sound which is best suited for concert work, a "B" tone chamber will give a little more brilliance (better for using with most bands), and a "C" tone chamber will give a lot more brilliance and edge which is great for rock and jazz bands.FACINGSFacing (3, 5, or 7): The facing is determined by the distance from the tip of the reed to where it first touches the mouthpiece. The bigger the facing number, the farther back the reed goes before actually touching the mouthpiece. Changing the facing of the mouthpiece will generally change the volume of the instrument. With a shorter facing (3), less of the reed is vibrating, so the instrument will tend to be quieter, with a longer facing (7), more of the reed is vibrating, so the instrument will tend to be louder.

Don?t be fooled by the price of this mouthpiece. Many people pass by this mouthpiece because they think it is for students. This mouthpiece has a great sound. It has a big husky sound that can get very loud, depending on the facing. On some of the biggest facing(s) I can get really high in the altissimo. The design of this piece is brilliant. Don't over look.
This mouthpiece is proof that there can be an affordable mouthpiece that is professional level. Great for jazz, the hard material makes a bright, natural, projecting sound that is great for a soloist. I recommend it with a rovner light ligature to get a good bold sound. The only reason I started to think about giving this product four stars is because of how bright and wild it can be. It can sometimes be hard to focus. Great for a professional.
I included this mp with my order for a Guardala MBII just to try: I've chosen an A5 to play baroque and have an alternative to the Selmer E I have with my SA 80 II. Imagine my surprise when I placed my RICO Royal 3 reed with the leather BG ligature and started to blow! Easiness and uniformity of tones were coming out from the horn in a very clean way; also the dynamic is very good: I placed the Selmer metal ligature and found it very balanced and louder, brightening the tone a little too. I was even able to play smoothly on to overtones and altissimo, as well as to the low notes! I Love it! Next order I will try a different measure. Highly recommended!
I am shocked by how well this 13$ piece sounds and plays. On my Martin tenor my B5 RR outplays anything else I have, also pieces costing 30 times as much. This is a truly excellent design, volume, projection, fullness; intonation is all there, no corners-cutting. Unbelievable. I have now 6 of those, the B5 is my favorite followed by the C7.
These have been around for years, and I finally tried one. What a surprise! I thought of these as "gimme" mouthpieces - the ones that come with the saxophone, but nobody really uses. I finally tried one, and was blown away. While not the most exciting or complex tone, these are still great mouthpieces. Very stable, very consistent, and excellent intonation. I have quite a collection of mouthpieces, and this one holds its own with my Selmer and Otto Link. Now, if Rico would only bring back the Metalite...
