Rico Royal Graftonite Tenor Saxophone MouthpieceRICO ROYAL GRAFONITETONE CHAMBERSTone Chamber Style (A, B, or C): The tone chamber of a mouthpiece is the inside area of the mouthpiece. The size and shape of the tone chamber will change the tone quality of the instrument. With the Rico Royal mouthpieces, an "A" tone chamber will give a dark sound which is best suited for concert work, a "B" tone chamber will give a little more brilliance (better for using with most bands), and a "C" tone chamber will give a lot more brilliance and edge which is great for rock and jazz bands.FACINGSFacing (3, 5, or 7): The facing is determined by the distance from the tip of the reed to where it first touches the mouthpiece. The bigger the facing number, the farther back the reed goes before actually touching the mouthpiece. Changing the facing of the mouthpiece will generally change the volume of the instrument. With a shorter facing (3), less of the reed is vibrating, so the instrument will tend to be quieter, with a longer facing (7), more of the reed is vibrating, so the instrument will tend to be louder.

I recently started playing the sax again after 20 years (I got a cheap chinese copy tenor for $307 all included) and replaced the mouthpiece with a Yamaha 5C* (about 0.082" tip opening) which improved the tone 100%, but recently got a Grafonite B7 (I think about 0.102" tip opening), and wow, what a difference - takes some chops and a couple of weeks long tones but can get a rich full tone out of a pretty crappy instrument; plus with this much play, it helps to get some of the out of tune notes near pitch. At less than twenty bucks, you can get a pro sound - if only I had a pro musician to go with it.
The wide opening on the -7 series makes this a loud mouthpiece - tell your family and neighbors to beware if you go for the -7.
Rating based on potential of the "C" chambered pieces. The pieces I've owned have had consistently good facing curves, but do not project well. Filled in the ditch behind the tip rail a little bit w. crazy glue, and projection and brightness improved. Added a baffle insert like a Runyon spoiler (fuggedabout the metal tail) and I had a very focused and responsive jazz piece with bottom to top response. A little bit of bore out at the back of chamber helped also, but difficult to do, this material is very tough. Same thing on an "A" chamber a bit darker and less projection, but some might like that.
I've been using this mpc for 2 years now with great results. Its now my main mpc for my Buescher TT beating out my old OttoLink STM. I find that I can get great tone and LOUDNESS without too much effort. In my performances (mostly Blues) this is a plus. Recommend it highly.
Works perfectly. Some may have to break it in first. =)
I chose an A5.
I am shocked by how well this 13$ piece sounds and plays. On my Martin tenor my B5 RR outplays anything else I have, also pieces costing 30 times as much. This is a truly excellent design, volume, projection, fullness; intonation is all there, no corners-cutting. Unbelievable. I have now 6 of those, the B5 is my favorite followed by the C7.
