I have used Rico reeds my entire playing career. I don't particularly like the Jazz reed but the Rico Royal is really good. I have never had more than one dud in a box but even that has been rare. Many of my pro friends think that finding two or three good reeds in a box is normal. That is true of some brands. I personally feel that Vandoren reeds are that way but the Rico Royal just isn't that way. I also find them to have a minimal break in time. I play a Yamaha Custom soprano with a Bari mouthpiece. The projection is excellent sometimes almost too good and the high register plays in tune. As the reed wears out you will get over blowing and the high register tends to go out of tune. I know that there are dozens of reeds on the market but Rico Royal is the most consistent. While I played with the AF band I could have any reed I wanted and could try many brands but I always came back to the Rico Royal. I play all the woodwinds and I prefer the Rico Royal for Bass Clarinet, Clarinet and all the Saxes. Now that they are putting each reed in its own protective plastic I have fewer broken or chipped reeds. This is great especially when I throw junk in my case and the boxes get a little crunched. Over the years I have lost more reeds to damage than I ever had ones that didn't play right so the plastic packing is great. I know these are a little expensive but I would recommend them for the beginner too after they get past the broken reed stage. These reeds are a must for the High School musician at every level.
