There's a lot of reeds out there but you won't find one more widely used than this one. I often use them right out of the box and most play fine for rock to pop. I always use 2 1/2 with a wide tip opening metal MP. There's a big difference between plain Rico's and Rico royal. Working them using the normal methods always extends life and playability but you can't go wrong with these.
Rico Royal has taken a big step up in quality in the last year or two. You can now count on getting a box full of well cut reeds, making it much more likely to get a reed that works well with minimal adjustment. You can pay a lot more for a reed, but it won't be any more likely to be a keeper. Try a box.
I tried Rico, Vandoren, and even flying goose. Nothing stopped the squeaking in the higher register. However, the royals silenced the squeak. They respond very well, and don't need to be soaked. Awesome reed.
I've been playing tenor for about 40 years, and I've been using Rico Royals for about 30 years. I occasionally try others, but always return to the Royals; I haven't found any other reed which plays as well and as consistently for me.
I play in a community based jazz ensemble, and the reeds do the job every time. They?re great in the high register (with good lips), and warm and deep in the low register.
